Ett tack räcker långt: En kvalitativ studie om arbetsmotivation på ettserviceföretag2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

In this report an energy analysis of a brick building housing mostly office- and workshop businesses. The energy analysis contained a heating balance and an electricity balance. The result of these balances was the basis for a couple of suggestions of interventions for energy efficiency. The purpose was to make an energy analysis regarding heating and cooling demand as well as electricity usage for a building in Trollhättan and also give propositions of interventions for energy efficiency. With a starting-point in drawings of the building and also collected data for bought district heating (?) and electricity for 2017, a heating balance and an electricity balance was set up. From these balances calculations were made to give a perspicuous picture over what the heat and electricity is used for in the building. The heating losses consisted of transmission-, ventilation-, infiltration- and drainage pipe losses. The input of heat consisted of bought district heating, solar radiation, internal heat from electrical devices and persons in the building as well as heat losses from hot water pipes and water heater that contributed to the heating. The electricity usage largely consisted of lighting, computers with accessories, kitchen equipment, ventilation system, pumps, cooling system and servers. The bought district heating was 863 823 kWh and the bought electricity was 482 395 kWh, whereof 119 179 kWh was calculated to be useful heat for the building. Solar radiation was calculated to contribute to the heating with 35 249 kWh. Of losses, transmission was the larger item with 822 747 kWh followed by infiltration losses of 131 258 kWh and ventilation losses of 77 418 kWh. Drainage pipe losses as well as input heating through heat losses from hot water pipes and water heater was small in the context. The results of the calculations showed that the building had an energy performance of 130 kWh/(m2, year) and an electricity usage of 21 kWh/(m2, year).Energy saving interventions that was proposed was for instance additional insulation, change of lighting, overlooking the operation of ventilation- and heating system, change of pumps, installing solar cells and Demand Controlled Ventilation.

Att inte sminka en gris: En kvalitativ studie om hur en kommun i Västsverige tolkar och förhåller sig till employer branding2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The telecom industry is characterized by a stressful work environment and high employee turnover. High employee turnover does not only contribute to high economic costs, but also to a low level of work ethic among employees. Therefore, we found it interesting to investigate how the employees of a telecom company experience leadership in the organization. Furthermore, the study aimed to investigate how the employees experience the demands, control and social support at their workplace and how they relate to the company's employee turnover. The study is of empirical nature and the methodological starting point was to make a qualitative study with an abductive approach. The data collection method used was semi structured interviews. The results show that the employees experience several different types of leadership, of which the democratic leadership style is the most appreciated. Including, supporting and showing empathy are three key qualities demanded by employees. Furthermore, the employees experience that the work is characterized by high demands, low control and low social support from managers and organizations.

    Abstract [en]

In a global world that is constantly evolving and competition hardens, constant improvements havebecome part of everyday life for most companies. Often, improvements are displayed on a board. The board is a good tool for executives to visualize goals for their employees in a simple yeteffective manner. Employees will feel more involved with this tool and participate in the decisionmakingprocess in the business. In addition to the tools that exist, a coaching leadership must alsoexist among leaders, where high quality communication and constructive feedback are somethingthat is part of everyday work. It is a matter of creating a two-way communication consisting oflistening, talk, agreeing and then acting between the parties. Feedback should be individualized aswell as group-adapted to get the best possible results.

    Abstract [en]

This study aims to streamline the packaging management at a producing company. Areas studied are the flow for a specific packaging type and crew when packing. The procedure for the study is done by doing a case study at Volvo Cars Co. The geographically limitations are with in the Press Office in Torslanda, the operator packing to the warehouse and from the storage to be transported to the customer. The method is to utilize various methods and tools to identify problem areas. When finding problem areas the purpose can be reached by evaluating the problems and provide possible improvements to eliminate these. Methods being used are SAM analysis, process flow analysis and a qualitative study. The results identifies problem areas in the lack of knowledge of handling package, for example that everyone works in different ways. Layout in the warehouse can be different, thus reducing transport between processes and eliminate non-value activities. Through a new way of packing, the lead time can be reduced when handling a filled package, as well as ensuring the safety of the employees.

    Abstract [en]

In society today, foreign-born individuals suffer from often having worse position on the labor market than persons belonging to the majority population. The problem is a fairly well known phenomenon and consists of difficulties for foreign-born individuals to enter the Swedish labor market or that they have worse labor conditions than Swedish-born individuals. Some previous studies demonstrate differences in salaries and positions but there are not as many studies that reflect what these differences mean for the individual at specific workplaces. Thereby it is important to highlight the foreign-born individuals working conditions at the workplace level and explore other areas of concern, for example, career opportunities, instability of work and internal training.

The purpose of this study is to examine how foreign-born with southern European background experience their work situation and their experiences of development work. The study is based on ten semi-structured interviews. The results show that the respondents perceive some barriers in their work. The results also show that respondents' perception of development in their work differ in marked differences between men and women. The results are analyzed and discussed on the basis of Tilly's theory of permanent inequality, intersectional perspectives and structural discrimination theory.

Aktivitetsbaserat arbetssätt: hållbart om alla tar sitt ansvar2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Our   changing   society influence   and   challenge the   way   of   working and   organizing work. Many organizations change the office environment and the work concept in order to create a  more  supporting  workplace. A  growing  office trend  is the  concept  activity based working, henceforth called ABW. The work concept means a paperless office, designed in different  zones customized  to  suit the needs of employees. The employees  have no  fixed seats,  instead  they are  encouraged  to  choose  workstation  based  on  the  assignment.  The concept aims  to inspire and  promote collaboration  and  innovation,  but  also to  increase profitability.

The study,  which  is  based  on a qualitative approach,  aims  to  explore how employees in the organization perceive that the physical and psychosocial work environment is affected by working activity based and which factors in the changed way of working that leads to increased or decreased perceived health and job satisfaction. The study shows that the physical environment has a strong positive impact on employees' perceived job satisfaction but  that  the  activity  based  working  in  itself  not  always  is  perceived  as  positive.  The employees did not fully utilize the activity based working concept as it is supposed and the different office zones are often perceived as non-functional. The main reasons for why the physical and psychosocial work environment is perceived as impaired are partly that the employees do not have their own seats, partly the reduced possibilities to gather the whole group. The conclusion is that good health and job satisfaction is more easily achieved if considering the employees individual conditions as well as ability and willingness to handle the changes that the new way of working means. Since the knowledge about the advantages and disadvantages of the concept, as well as it’s impact on employees' physical and psychological health is limited, we believe our study to be of value. Through improved knowledge  and  understanding the  opportunities  to  create  a  more  sustainable  worklife increases.

Ensam är inte stark: En kvalitativ studie om upplevelserna av att drabbas av utmattningssyndrom2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Resultatet har även analyserats utifrån New public management.

    Abstract [en]

In an accident, some seatbelt is let out by the seatbelt retractor in the vehicle. This is done to minimize the chest pressure and for the occupant to correctly impact the air bag. In an adaptive load limiter (LLA) the force in the seatbelt could be changed between different levels. In this way the chest pressure and the speed in to the air bag can be optimized and to minimize injuries. The work has been aimed at develop new concept of switching between the high and low force. The goal is to reduce the number of parts, the complexity and the size of the components. The LLA device today is made out of nine components. This work has included brainstorming for ideas of new concepts. The concept have been sketched. The three best concepts have been valued in a concept evaluation matrix. CAD- models have been done. Calculations have been done by hand to see which forces the components will be subjected to. FEM-calculations have also been done to see that components can handle the amount of stress they which they will be subjected to during the switching. Tests of components have also been made to verify the concept on Autolivs test center. The results were then evaluated. The work is ended by recommendations of further development. This thesis has been done on Autoliv Sweden AB in Vårgårda. Autoliv was founded in 1953 in Vårgårda of the two brothers Lennart and Stig Lindblad. Autoliv is world- leading in car safety. Autoliv is currently operating in 27 countries and has over 70 000 employees. They save over 30 000 lives and prevent over 300 000 injuries every year. Autoliv has made seatbelts since 1956.

Quality-driven logistics2007Licentiate thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The overall objective of this thesis is to describe and explain how different quality management philosophies can be combined in the supply/demand chain, in order to contribute to its resilience. The analysis is both quantitative and qualitative, based on theory and literature related to TQM, Lean, Agile and Six Sigma, one literature study and three case studies that were performed in companies. The studies are related to four research questions and are presented in four papers. The first research question focuses on similarities and differences between the quality management concepts TQM, Lean and Six Sigma. The findings were that TQM, Six Sigma and Lean have many similarities, but they differ in some areas. For examples Lean addresses process flow and waste, whereas Six Sigma addresses variation and design. The conclusion is that there is a lot to gain if organisations are able to combine these three concepts, as they are complementary. Two case studies and a literature survey supported the findings. The second research question focuses on outcomes in a logistics process if using quality management. The findings were that the quality management approach leads to risks being mitigated, managed and monitored and ensures a more effective, robust and flexible process, very much in line with the Agility philosophy. Solutions for quicker response to customers have also been introduced. The findings were supported by two case studies in seven companies. The third research question focuses on how prepared the transport- and logistics-oriented companies are for the application of quality concepts and quality management philosophy. The findings were that they can be described as being TQM-oriented. The companies do not consider Lean and Six Sigma to be future trends. Focus is on the customer, while they do not focus on variations or removing waste. The findings were supported by a case study in 24 companies. The fourth research question focuses on how quality concepts can contribute to risk control and resilience in an organisation. A combined Lean/Six Sigma approach by using Six Sigma framework and the last phase, Perfection, in the Lean concept, implies that the companies’ resilience, due to their strengthened ability to handle variability, risk management and agility, was improved. The findings were supported by two case studies in seven companies.

Supply chain resilience through quality management2009Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The length and complexity of the supply chain tend to increase, rather than diminish, thereby making the supply chain riskier and less predictable and, hence, more vulnerable. At the same time, customers are becoming increasingly demanding. The challenge to businesses today is to create a resilient supply chain in order to manage and mitigate risk and vulnerability. The purpose of the thesis is to explore, describe and develop the use of a combined quality management philosophy in logistics processes in order to improve supply chain resilience. The findings are supported by six studies, which are presented here in six papers. The studies show that there is a lot to gain if organisations are able to combine quality management philosophies, as they are complementary to one another. TQM places its strongest emphasis on the commitment and involvement of all employees. Lean is a discipline that focuses on process speed and removal of waste in order to increase customer value. Six Sigma benefits from an added focus on variability and design of products/services and processes. It has been indicated that a combined quality management philosophy makes the logistics processes more reliable, flexible, agile and robust while reducing cost. The companies’ risk awareness has increased and their risk management has been improved, thanks to the Six Sigma training programmes and philosophy. Using a combined quality management philosophy, the speed of production could be increased, and the responsiveness and flexibility could be improved, which means quicker response to changes. It has also been indicated that a combined quality management philosophy improves the companies’ resilience, due to their increased agility and strengthened ability to handle variability and risk management. Quality management tools can be very effective in the companies’ efforts to control supply chain risk and to identify risk sources of variation, even outside the focal company. In Six Sigma projects, the root cause of variation is often found outside the focal companies, which requires more collaboration in the supply chain. However, if the companies that use a combined quality management philosophy intend to become more resilient, they must involve suppliers and customers more in their own processes and design products/services and processes together. Collaboration with the suppliers and customers and the notion of how to extend a combined quality management philosophy outside the focal company are of importance in order to make the whole supply chain resilient. This could lead to a problem, especially since the conditions for transport and logistics in regards to the application of quality methods and tools represent a large area, unexploited by the companies. On the other hand, Six Sigma has standardised training courses, and it has been demonstrated how a Six Sigma framework can enable collaboration across companies’ boundaries in the supply chain, with the use of Six Sigma training and the DMAIC-roadmap as a common platform. Even if a combined quality management philosophy is effective and efficient, the companies must re-invest in additional methods, tools and strategies to make the entire supply chain resilient. It could be this re-investment in risk prevention and mitigation solutions that enables faster process responsiveness, the establishment of a risk management culture by creating common values, culture and rules in the supply chain and the use of logistics strategies and methods.

    Abstract [en]

TPM in a Lean office environment can create values both in a business and an employee dimension. In the employee dimension TPM reduces the risk of missing/forgetting areas of responsibility and creates more involvement. In the business dimension objectives such as cost, quality and supporting the reduction of waste improved. Preventive maintenance meetings can be included and performed once a month in the ordinary departmental “stand-up meetings”. Methods like 5S, which need to be updated on a continuous basis, and standardized maintenance should also be connected to the TPM work. But first all employees should be trained in order to have the same direction/behavior.

How to Integrate Suppliers by Training in Lean Thinking2013In: / [ed] Dahlgaard Park, Su Mi, Dahlgaard, Jens, Gomišček, Boštjan, University of Maribor , 2013Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: Much research has addressed how to implement lean in a focal company, but little has been published about how to integrate suppliers in strategies and the focal company’s culture, such as lean production or lean thinking. The purpose of the article is to investigate if suppliers can become more integrated in the supply chain by training in lean thinking at the focal company and to explain a possible structure of the training. Design/methodology/approach: A multiple-case study has been conducted of the focal com- pany and five of its supply companies. The findings are supported empirically by on-site interviews and by observations, as well as by a binomial two-proportion test that was used to analyse the statistical data of the delivery precision. Findings: While the training programme does not show a conclusive result for the supply chain, it has made a difference for all participating suppliers. In most cases the training programme was a trigger that started or boosted the internal work with continuous improvements. In some cases it helped create structured ways of working and improved the internal production flows.

    Abstract [en]

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate what experienced professional engineers value regarding work related factors and what makes them stay in an employment and in an organization.

Theory: The theory used is derived from relevant research regarding work life science and was divided into several parts. The first part contains research about Employer Branding and how employers can use strategies to attract candidates and retain current employees. The second part concerns turnover intentions which is used to examine whether there are relationships between work-related factors that professional engineers believe they have in their workplace and their intentions to stay. The third part embraces Model of retention which contains eight work-related factors which are divided into organizational- and job level. These eight work-related factors shows to have impact on retention of professional workers. Some items were added from Bloom Live Connect Grow Employer Branding framework to complete the ability to measure retention levels. At last we used theory regarding employee engagement to predict the target group’s engagement level to see if it had significant impact on retention of experienced professional engineers.

Methodology: A cross-sectional quantitative approach was used in this study and a questionnaire was sent out to 301 experienced professional engineers that had an employment within a global industrial enterprise. Approximately 158 experienced professional engineers completed the survey which lead to a responding frequency of 52,5 % percent.

Findings: The result of the study showed that almost all 26 items tested out of Model of retention scored high means. Therefore they proved to be important for the maintenance of professional engineers to make them want to remain in an employment and in an organization. The only work-related factor that showed statistical significance from the regression analysis performed was compensation. Another interesting disclosure found was that the target group proved to be engaged, but nevertheless, there was a greater intention to leave than to remain in the workplace.

Practical implications: It is important for employers to pay attention to the results of this study when shaping workforce strategies to become competitive as an employer.

Social implications: Engineers are a sought-after target group in the labor market and therefore it is important for employers and HR-departments to work with strategies regarding remaining valuable competences such as experienced professional engineers to ensure the future of the organization.

The purpose is to investigate if there is a need for a new ergonomic and user-friendly cargo bar that facilitates freight securing. If the need arises, how should such a cargo bar be developed and designed? Market research provides answers to whether there is a need for a new cargo bar and what specification and functions the user think the cargo bar should include. The technology study shows how a cargo bar will be developed and designed to be more user friendly. A cargo bar is a device that is tensioned between the floor and the roof of the truck´s load space and will prevent the goods from falling or start gliding. The market study contains patent investigations, position analysis, interviews and evaluation in the form of a quality house. In the technology study, different concepts were developed which were later used to develop a functioning 3D model. During the model development strength calculations were performed. The market investigation shows that there is a need for a new user-friendly cargo bar, where the main features are that it should be an integrated handle so the fright or users don’t get damaged or injured, it should be easy to load, there should be a release button and it should have a long service life. A request from the interviews was to minimize the weight of the cargo bar, this will lead to less strain injuries. In the technology study, a digital prototype proposal was created on a new cargo bar with a power indicator that shows how good the cargo bar presses between floor and roof.

Universitetsstyrning: upplevelser, värderingar & konsekvenser2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Återgång i arbete: En studie ur HR:s perspektiv angående återgång i arbete efter en långtidssjukskrivning2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Context: Sick leave is a measurement of sustainability and the number of actors/participants involved are many. The actors work toward the same goal, but use different methods to reach that goal. As international research focuses more on collaboration between employer and the health care, it is interesting to raise the knowledge about how HR works with the return to the work from long-term sick leaves, in a Swedish context.

Objective: This study researches the work regarding employees long term sick leaves, from the HR perspective, on how they work to retain an employee after a long term sick leave and how the collaboration looks like between HR, company healthcare and the Swedish social insurance agency (Försäkringskassan).

Method: A qualitative interview guide was created for HR-representatives with questions regarding the return to workplaces. Six HR-representatives from six large private companies were interviewed for the study.

Results: Most of the HR-representatives worked in similar ways with the return to work from a sick leave. Differences occurred primarily depending on which type of working position the HR-representatives  were  working  towards.  The  view  of  the  collaboration  between  the company healthcare and Försäkringskassan were similar.

Conclusion: HR works primarily with preventing that health issues arise. During the sick leave period they primarily work with various forms of adaption if possible. The dialogue is in focus to avoid that the employee enters a new sick leave after returning to work. The collaboration with the company healthcare happens on the directives of the employer, and the collaboration with Försäkringskassan is in some cases tense.

“Vad har de här gubbarna med min framtid att göra?”: En kvalitativ studie om förväntningar på personalvetarutbildningens innehåll och syfte2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Service delivery requirements of mail order/e-commerce customers: an important consumer insight2010In: Proceedings of Nofoma 2010, Kolding, NOFOMA , 2010Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Traditionally, mail order and e-commerce organisations view the consumers as one entity, meaning there is no differentiation of service. Research has shown that return levels depend on both age and lead-time, and consequently end user requirements are of great interest. This study investigates expected lead-time service requirements of one organisations mail order/e-commerce customers and measures the gap between the expected and the specified service. A case study was performed with one of the leading Swedish mail order/e-commerce organisations. The descriptive study combined qualitative and quantitative data answering questions regarding the consumer’s requirements and how they vary depending on age. This research is based on primary data from a customer survey with answers from more than 6 000 respondents. The proposition that the gap between specified and expected customer service requirements varies with age and lead-time was supported, thus indicating that mail order and e-commerce organisations should work closer with their customers. They should likely segment their customers and differentiate their service delivery. The presented research results describe what service requirements regarding lead-time are, and how they vary with age for customers of one organisation. There is a gap between the customers’ service requirements and the service specified/delivered by the case organisation and the gap varies with age as proposed. The only normative statement is that close cooperation between the case organisation and its customers is vital. How customers should be categorized and how to differentiate the service delivery will be topics of further research.

”Jag säger upp mig”: En kvalitativ studie om kundtjänstmedarbetares upplevelse av att arbeta prestationsbaserat och målstyrt2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The emergence of an increasingly flexible working life has contributed to the gradual reduction of the boundaries between work and leisure. At the same time digitization has made it possible for a constant connection and with the help of various technological aids. Individuals can now work anywhere and at any time. This means that responsibility is attributed to the individual himself being the one who controls and structures his work. At the same time we have increased competition, that demands better availability and a customer service in world class.

This study aims to investigate whether a borderless work turns out for real estate agents at two offices. With help of Goffman's dramaturgical perspective, Hochschild's theory of emotional work and Foucault's theory of self-disciplined governance, we have analyzed our empirical data. Furthermore, we have started from previous research that concerns flexible work, recovery, influence of technology, roles and the boundary between working time and leisure time. We started from a qualitative method and conducted 8 semistructured interviews. The result showed that the real estate brokerage profession in a large extent includes borderless work. At the same time it is a profession that requires a skilled “actor” to be able to respond to the customers. The constant accessibility is a factor that everyone experiences in different ways and has therefore developed strategies to be able to handle this. Women felt less confident in their profession compared to men, based on that costumers often questioned women’s knowledge. Furthermore, the different experiences and strategies may be based on whether the respondents relate to the professional role's requirements or not.

Modelling of Discrete Downtime in Continuous Crushing Operation2015In: Computational Modelling 2015, MEI conferenceArticle in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Crushing is a harsh process and production units are subjected to wear and failure over time which will reduce the overall performance of the plant. To achieve optimum process performance, both time dependant process dynamics and operating conditions should be taken into account. In this paper the aim is to create a framework for simulating the process from a more operational perspective to evaluate process performance and process optimum for different operational scenarios. The objective is to model and simulate the discrete phenomena that can cause the process to alter performance and implement it with dynamic process simulations. A method for combining discrete probability simulations with time-continuous simulations for process evaluation and optimization is presented. The proposed framework demonstrates a systematic approach to evaluate the process performance and locating optimum process configuration, for a given condition. The developed models can be used to optimize different aspects of the operation depending on the defined objective function and the system boundaries. Optimization of process throughput by manipulating configuration of both the grizzly and the crushers, as well as the time between calibrations has been illustrated in this paper. Adjusting the process continuously and calibrating it at the appropriate time can have major benefits when it comes to the process availability and utilization, increasing performance by 4.1-9.3 % in these cases. Evaluation of process robustness with regards to different maintenance strategies and process variation gave an indication of the process and unit performance under a long operating period. By combining discrete and dynamic simulation, a higher simulation fidelity can be achieved to provide a more operational perspective to the optimization and process analysis.

Engagerat ledarskap och allas delaktighets betydelse för välmående: Kvantitativ studie kring välmående inom byggbranschen2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This study has been made to see how a participatory model of municipal activities works in practice and whether the main purpose, to give users greater influence and a greater participation  is achieved in reality.  This  is  because the  model's  design  as  a  bottom -up perspective, where users themselves should have the opportunity to influence and to feel involved in their everyday lives. Even though the research about the participation model is limited the scientists agree that there is a problem about the behavior and communication to the clients, this will require training of staff and counselors. We have used a qualitative method of semi-structured interviews based on a phenomenological perspective. Study participants are managers, staff and counselors from local government activities in the Västra Götaland region, and they work with clients who have disabilities. The theories we have used is Habermas's communication theory and Foucault's power theory.

Questions that respondents did reflect on included their views on the participation of the clients and if they experienced any change in the approach towards clients. We also had an interest in finding out whether it is the users themselves who should determine what themes they considered relevant to be involved in and if the decisions they make actually give effect. The approach we have assumed has been critical and of focus on dialogue, power and hidden power. What has emerged in the results is that the model has contributed to a changed approach of the staff. The power has been shifted between staff and clients. As we have problematized the discussion, all interviewees believe in the model but fear that the model will not be continued and only be a temporary activity.

Quality-Driven Production of Aggregates in Crushing Plants2009Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Aggregate quality is of great importance, and in this context it is essential to understand how various process parameters influence the product quality characteristics. Thus, there is a need for aggregate producers to improve their process knowledge. Research has led to an improved understanding of how different process parameters affect the outcomes of specific comminution processes. In aggregate production, breakage models are one example of such a research result. These models have been refined over the years. The breakage models that have been presented to date can accurately predict the size distribution of aggregates. On the other hand, they cannot normally predict any other material characteristics such as shape and strength. This thesis outlines the research to date, which has focused on a frequently discussed quality parameter, namely the shape of the product. Knowledge of various methodologies is required to measure this parameter. A novel method for measuring the shape of fine aggregates is presented. The rheology test, the methodology of which was originally based on a New Zealand standard, can be correlated with other data to measure particle shape in accordance with the F-aspect method. The correlation between these methods is very good, and since the rheology test is easy to use, it is suitable for a quarry or a basic test facility. The cone crusher is the most commonly used tertiary stage crusher today. One of its great advantages is that it produces a relatively low amount of fines. However, it only produces acceptable particle shapes for certain fraction sizes. The vertical shaft impact crusher (VSI) creates particles of a very satisfactory shape across all fractions, including fine aggregate, as confirmed by studies using the aforementioned rheology test. This thesis presents two models for predicting shape in crushed aggregate from a cone crusher. The first model is empirical, and my conclusion is that there are four dominating parameters affecting shape: the average feed size, the closed side setting (CSS), throw and eccentric speed. To further investigate how compressive breakage affects particle shape, an inter-particle breakage model is introduced. This model simulates a specific crushing stage inside the crusher. Simulation results show that the outcome from a crushing event can be predicted with good accuracy. A VSI model for describing particle size and shape is presented in this work. It is proposed that the dominating breakage mechanism in a VSI equipped with a rock box is of abrasive character. Abrasive breakage can appropriately shape all particle sizes, assuming the crusher is operated at a proper velocity. The empirical cone crusher model and the VSI models are combined in a mathematical simulation in order to determine how a crushing plant should be operated to maximise both yield and aggregate quality. The results show that there exists a set of rules to determine the crusher and screen settings that will achieve the best performance in terms of product yield and quality requirements.

Model of banana screen for robust performance2015In: Minerals Engineering, ISSN 0892-6875, E-ISSN 1872-9444, Vol. 91, p. 66-73Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Screens are an important production unit in crushing plants. The performance of the screen is essential to the performance of the crushing plant. In this paper a mechanistic model of a banana screen is described and a novel model for screen deck configuration is presented. The developed model can be used for optimization of a screen so that it has the best possible performance with respect to different feeding conditions, in order to obtain a desired separation. The simulation results were compared to full scale test data and the conclusions from this comparison is that the screen model needs further parameters to handle the necessary screen deck configuration. An initial static model was derived to explain how the screen deck configuration will affect the screen efficiency. The modification of the screen deck parameters resulted in a better correlation both regarding size distribution and predicted capacity.

Towards dynamical profit optimization of comminution circuits2016In: Minerals Engineering, ISSN 0892-6875, E-ISSN 1872-9444, Vol. 103, p. 14-24Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

There is an increasing demand to optimize performance and profit of comminution circuits. Research in this area has resulted in the development of numerous optimization tools, and recent research has shown that the quality aspects of the production have a great influence on the optimization results. The quality, cost, profit and capacity of a product are influenced by several parameters, and in order to control all of these parameters it is necessary to use some sort of optimization algorithm. In this paper, a novel approach to apply e.g. cost, revenue, capacity and quality in order to perform a multi objective optimization with the ability to handle dynamic variations of a comminution is presented. The problem with optimizations in general is that the objective function used for optimization is reduced in complexity in order to save computational time. In a comminution process performance varies with time and in order to perform a correct optimization the objective function used must be able to handle this type of dynamic behavior. The process has a given set of constraints that represents the conditions normal in these type of comminution applications. The first step in this paper is to identify if the range of the constraints can cause undesirable production costs when reaching for a given product property. In this step a dynamic response model is described that will be able to address the difficulties with optimizing dynamic systems. The next step in the optimization is the definition of the multi-objective optimization formulation including constraints for the optimization. Evaluating the result of the optimization in combination with a strategy for relaxing constraint can show how to increase overall productivity and still reach certain product properties. The conclusions made in this work are that multi objective optimization is essential when optimizing a comminution circuit against multiple objectives.

Comparative Study of Optimization Schemes in Mineral Processing Simulations2018Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Modelling and simulations for mineral processing plants have been successful in replicating and predicting predefined scenarios of an operating plant. However, there is a need to explore and increase the potential of such simulations to make them attractive for users. One of the tools to increase the attractiveness of the simulations is through applying optimization schemes. Optimization schemes, applied on mineral processing simulations, can identify non-intuitive solutions for a given problem. The problem definition itself is subjective in nature and is dependent on the purpose of the operating plant. The scope of this paper is to demonstrate two optimization schemes: Multi-Objective Optimization (MOO) using a Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Multi-Disciplinary Optimization (MDO) using an Individual Discipline Feasible (IDF) approach. A two stage coarse comminution plant is used as a case plant to demonstrate the applicability of the two optimization schemes. The two schemes are compared based on the problem formulations, types of result and computation time. Results show that the two optimization schemes are suitable in generating solutions to a defined problem and both schemes can be used together to produce complementary results.

An empirical model for predicting flakiness in cone crushing2006In: International Journal of Mineral Processing, ISSN 0301-7516, E-ISSN 1879-3525, Vol. 79, no 1, p. 49-60Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

A fundamental understanding of the factors influencing particle shape is of central importance for optimisation of the output quality from crushing plants for aggregate production. The literature reports that the wear on and setting of a cone crusher influence particle shape, The fact that wear on and the setting of a cone crusher influence particle shape is considered common knowledge and is also reported in the literature. To date, no mathematical model for predicting particle shape has been presented. A novel model capable of predicting aggregate shape is presented in this paper. The particle flakiness model has two parameters: the average particle size of the feed and the closed side setting (CSS) of the crusher. A common method used for controlling the process flow in a crushing plant is also demonstrated. Detailed process knowledge is important in order to minimize the circulating load whilst still maximizing product quality. The model shows that the flakiness of the product can be estimated with knowledge of the following two parameters: CSS and the average particle size of the feed. Additional investigations are needed to improve the precision of the model.

Measuring characteristics of aggregate material from vertical shaft impact crushers2006In: Minerals Engineering, ISSN 0892-6875, E-ISSN 1872-9444, Vol. 19, no 15, p. 1479-1486Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Natural gravel has traditionally been the main choice of material for Swedish concrete manufacturers. However, due to the fact that natural gravel also acts as a fresh water filter, the deposits are limited. The obvious question is how to compare machine made and natural gravel in terms of particle shape, rheology and other material characteristics. This paper will present some methods and results that demonstrate performance of different machine made rock materials. Particle shape characteristics were assessed from flow measurements in a standard cone. The vertical shaft impact crusher (VSI) produces gravel that is a good alternative to natural gravel. The quality of the material and the particle shape seem to meet concrete producers’ demands.

    Abstract [en]

The vertical shaft impact (VSI) crusher is a commonly-used machine in aggregate production. A comprehensive understanding of the physical phenomena that influence the power consumption and the particle output of the device are essential to enable development of protocols that minimize energy consumption during rock crushing. While natural gravel has traditionally been the main choice of material for Swedish concrete manufacturers, the number of deposits is limited due to its role as a fresh water filter. It is therefore essential to achieve a product size distribution of aggregate that is on the same order as that of natural gravel to enable its use in concrete production. This work aims to present a model that predicts capacity, power and particle size distribution in a VSI crusher.

Framework for material modelling in a processing plant2015Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Material modelling within a crushing plant is closely dependent on both manual and automatic operations as well as a close follow up on the utilization of the plant performance from a management perspective. The desire to fully be able to utilize the crushing plant with respect e.g. to material handling is limited due to the lack of possibility to fully observe actions within the process. There are large quantities of data that can be monitored in the crushing plant SCADA system. However the data collected are governed by the quantity of actual sensors in the process. The aim with this paper is to propose a method for how-to pre-process the automatically gathered SCADA data in order to fill up dynamic models for process simulations. There is a fundamental need to increase the resolution of how the crushing plant behaves. This will be structured as a framework for analysing and suggesting model improvements that will increase the utilization and decrease both manual operations and give better performance when controlling the process.

Advanced Material Modelling In Crushing Plants Using Real Time Algorithms2015Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In process control of crushing plants the traditional control is focused on stability control of single machines and not on controlling material utilization. The reason for this is that the use of material property models is not that well known. The material models describe properties as e.g. capacity over time for a given product and this may depend on many parameters and dynamic effects in the process. Due to this it is complicated to model and thus a methodology is needed to solve this problem. In this paper a novel method for modeling the current effect that the production units have on the material presented. The paper presents a methodology how to use process data from SCADA system to analyze and suggest dynamic material model properties in real time.

Influence of throw and compression ratio on particle shape - A full scale investigation and laboratory tests2010In: Minerals Engineering, ISSN 0892-6875, E-ISSN 1872-9444, Vol. 23, no 7, p. 549-557Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The machine parameters of throw and eccentric speed affect the particle shape. Their influence on particle shape is however not fully investigated. Preliminary tests on a full-scale crusher had shown certain trends in regard to the flakiness of the product (Fig. 1). These effects were investigated in detail by means of a series of piston-and-die tests, followed by modelling of the laboratory data. An empirical model of a crusher was developed which links the product size distribution and the shape of the particles to operating parameters. The simulator produced trends which were similar to the full-scale data. The throw and eccentric speed affects the utilised compression acting on the rock/rock-bed. This paper presents a method suitable for characterizing the compressive breakage behaviour of rock materials during form conditioned compression. In this method, size reduction is primarily related to geometric compression. The method provides a complete description of the breakage characteristics of the tested rock material when compressive crushing is employed. The results can be used for modelling and simulation purposes in the design of crushing equipment or crushing plants. A novel approach to optimise form conditioned crushing in order to achieve an acceptable particle size and shape is presented. The paper concludes that inter-particle breakage in combination with high compression ratio is beneficial for the particle shape. The full scale tests support this since an increase in throw improves particle shape for particles subjected to inter-particle breakage. © 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Research in this area has resulted in the development of numerous optimisation tools, and resent research has shown that the economic aspects of production have great influence on the optimisation results. The profitability of a product is influenced by several parameters, and control of all these parameters is necessary to use some sort of optimisation software. In this paper, we present a case study of a typical crushing plant, with the goal of reducing the number of crusher while keeping the plant capacity and quality. By reducing the number of crusher the plant will need less maintenance which will decrease the operating costs. The article presents a method to combine crushing plant simulation and optimisation with quality and economic considerations in order to successfully study alternative configurations of the plant.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Globalization and the outside world's influence on modern organizations have created new demands and goals for our Swedish employers. Flexibility and rapid changes demand that today's employers must be well-suited for change. This in turn means that the employee must also be ready to meet similar requirements. New technology and new ways of working have given the modern office worker a daily life that can be completely paperless and because of this the employee isn't linked to one specific workstation. The key reason for to the new way of working is to increase profitability, but benefits such as increased creativity and increased cooperation among employees are highlighted as benefits from the employer. This study is based on a qualitative approach. The aim of the study was to capture the employees experiences of working activity-based. The study does not intend to explain whether this new way of working is good or bad for the employee, but only for the purpose of capturing their experience. The study shows that the overall experience of working activity-based is good, but that experiences vary between different individuals. The conclusion is that employees need to have the feeling of being able to control their everyday lives and opportunities to choose the right place for the right task for this work method to be experienced well. The value of this research lies in the fact that because employee experience is something that has not been the center of the research before, and we need to know more about the effects of this increasingly popular way of designing modern offices. If we capture the employee's experience of working in this environment, we can more easily understand how it is perceived and better conditions improve the working environment in the long term in a society that continually places new demands on organizations and employee's.

Det gränslösa arbetets pris: När 24 timmar om dygnet inte räcker till2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

In this work sealing methods for aluminum housing have been investigated. The work was delimited to the automotive industry and static gaskets. The thesis brings up how the flange impacts on the sealing capability and the gasket, sealing types, the surface impact on gasket materials, porosity, relative material cost and fasteners. The work is based on a literature study and interviews with concerned people at the company. Practical samples were carried out on a number of materials from suppliers and the materials where exposed to different chemicals and then tensile tested. The materials that were collected through interviews and the literature study testify that many parameters influence the possible sealing methods. It’s not just the material itself that needs to be taken into account. Factors like flange design, material cost, surface defects, fasteners and porosity have a great impact. The practical sample testifies that different chemicals have dif-ferent impact on the mechanical properties and swelling of the material. Finally, a couple of sealing materials are suggested that are suitable for the company to use in their products.
