Nowadays companies are in a dynamic environment leading to competition in finding new revenue streams to strengthen their positions in their markets by using new technologies to provide capabilitiesto organize resources whilst taking into account changes that can occur in their environment. Therefore, decision making is inevitable to combat uncertainties where taking the optimal action by leveraging concepts and technologies that support decision making such as Business Intelligence (BI)tools and systems could determine a company’s future. Companies can optimize their decision making with BI features like Data-Driven Alerts that sends messages when fluctuations occur within a supervised threshold that reflects the state of business operations. The purpose of this research was to conduct an empirical study on how Swedish companies and enterprises located in different industries apply BI tools and with Data-driven Alerts features for decision making whereby we further studied the characteristics of Data-driven Alerts in terms of usability from the perspectives of different industry professionals through the thematic lens of the Technology acceptance model (TAM) in a qualitative approach. We conducted interviews with professionals from diverse organizations where we applied the Thematic Coding technique on empirical results for further analysis. We found out that by allowing possibilities for users to analyze data in their own preferences for decisions, it will provide managers and leaders with sufficient information needed to empower strategic and tactical decision-making. Despite the emergence of state-of-the-art predictive analytics technologies such as Machine Learning and AI, the literature clearly states that these processes are technical and complex to be comprehended by the decision maker. At the end of the day, prescriptive analytics will end up providing descriptive options being presented to the end user as we move towards automated decision making. This we see as an opportunity for reporting tools and data-driven alerts to be in contemporary symbiotic relationship with advanced analytics in decision making contexts to improve its outcome, quality and user friendliness.
This study aims to examine how web developers work with ecologically sustainable web development and what may impel them to do so. The global impact from the use and development of web products and services are growing in a steady pace. This was inves-tigated through a qualitative study including semi structured interviews with five web developers.
Results and analysis show that web developers today do not work to any great extent with ecologically sustainable web development. The biggest reason for this is ignorance and that there is no correct definition of what it means. Web developers' attitudes are positive towards such work, but the drivers do not match the attitudes, since sustainable work is not a priority. The study shows that there are both opportunities and obstacles to work with ecologically sustainable web development. The greatest opportunities lie in the fact that interest in sustainability increases and that it has positive effects. The biggest obstacles are ignorance and the fact that sustainability is not yet given high priority.
Based on research organized as a number of workshops, case studies and interviews with experienced practitioners as well as academics, we present in this report the most important findings on how to create and sustain successful knowledge management in a community environment. The cases, workshops and interviews deal specifically with the Microsoft Solutions Sharing Network (SSN) program, but the findings, conclusions and preliminary recommendations can be applied more generally to the development of any knowledge management community. A key conclusion is that the bulk of efforts toward creating successful knowledge management communities focus oil less technical, or softer aspects like leadership, culture, social settings and value of participation. However, these are essential, but not sufficient, ingredients for success. Technical issues, issues regarding development and customization of the tools used to facilitate knowledge management (for example, the SSN web portal), and emerging legal issues surrounding the sharing of intellectual property UP) may be perceived as somewhat less important to the participants, but are nevertheless key factors in the long term success of these communities. It is also concluded that the foundation for successful collaboration is primarily laid in the initial phases of community development. A community must make a positive impression oil its participants from the very beginning because most people will not give it a second chance. In this report we have highlighted three important areas to consider when establishing portals for knowledge management: Leadership, Purpose and Process/Infrastructure. A leadership with high credibility in the subject is needed to lead the participants in the right direction, manage the cultural processes and to make sure that relevant content can be found. Initially it is the content that brings people to a specific community. Thus, there has to be some common purpose that not only needs to be in congruence with the professional role of the participants but also be inspiring for them as well. Additionally, the community should have some sort of process that the participants can understand and suits the way they would like to interact. Face-to-face meetings and networking activities create trust which is important to get the process started. Language, IT platform, support and rules governing the contribution, creation and sharing of 'knowledge' for the community are other concerns that need to be considered within the process.
This paper describes past, ongoing and planned work on the collection and transcription of spoken language samples for all the South African official languages and as part of this the training of researchers in corpus linguistic research skills. More specifically the work has involved (and still involves) establishing an international corpus linguistic network linked to a network hub at a UNISA website and the development of research tools, a corpus research guide and workbook for multimodal communication and spoken language corpus research. As an example of the work we are doing and hope to do more of in the future, we present a small pilot study of the influence of English and Afrikaans on the 100 most frequent words in spoken Xhosa as this is evidenced in the corpus of spoken interaction we have gathered so far. Other planned work, besides work on spoken language phenomena, involves comparison of spoken and written language and work on communicative body movements (gestures) and their relation to speech.
This paper concerns the different ways in which hesitation, and hesitation related phenomena like uncertainty, doubt and other phenomena where lack of knowledge is involved are expressed in different cultures. The paper focuses especially on shoulder shrugging as a signal of hesitation or uncertainty, and starts from the observation that shoulder shrugging has different interpretations depending on the interlocutor’s cultural background. It is not commonly used in Eastern cultures while in Western cultures it is a sign of uncertainty and ignorance. The paper reports a small study on the differences in interpretation of a particular video tape gesture, and draws some preliminary conclusions of how this affects intercultural communication between human interlocutors and between humans and conversational agents.
This bachelor thesis examines the access and pedagogic roles of the school library room at a primary school with students in preschool class up to ninth grade. As of 2017 the school library has new premises with the goal of making the school library more available for all students at the school. The purpose of the study was to gain knowledge about primary school students access to the library room, its role and how the room is used for pupils learning by teachers. The method used was semi-structured interviews with the librarian and two teachers from each of the three primary school stages. In the study I adapted Elisabeth Tallaksen Rafste's theory of school libraries as social systems and structures. I related to the influence of teachers and libraries on how they affect the role of the library room through their view of the library. The study shows that the library room is kept in high regard by the teacher, as well as being more available to the pupils than before. Due to circumstances at the school, only the older student had individual access to the library while the younger had to be accompanied by a teacher. None of the teachers use the room for pedagogic activities, though some see pedagogic roles in the room, such as student learning through social interactions. The room has both a learning and leisure role. An unexpected result was the teachers appreciation for and close bond to the librarian.
Data collection is a topic that affects every person that uses various Internet services and has been a current topic the past year among individuals and the actors that collects data. It concerns actors collecting and storing personal data from users that either have or have no knowledge about it. The Cambridge Analytica-scandal which affected over 50 million users on Facebook initiated a discussion which concerns if data collection is right or wrong, but also how actors handle personal data and how it affects the integrity. With the enforcement of General Data Protection Regulation GDPR the 25th of May which will affect actors involved with data collection or usage. The regulation is about how actors can store data and use it. The regulation will also provide users the right to demand to be removed from actor’s databases. There has been some research on opinions among users concerning data collection, but not how they can be different with the knowledge of GDPR. So how is the attitude towards data collection among internet users? Do internet users apply services to prevent data collection? Do they even know about GDPR? A survey was performed to answer these questions and where the answers were put together in the form of statistic data. The purpose of this pre-study is to examine what the attitude is towards data collection. The study also examines how technical knowledge, age and knowledge about GDPR can be related to answers given in the survey. Based on the empirical data and identified relations between measurable variables the study’s conclusions can be made: The attitude to data collection is significant between users who have knowledge about GDPR and those how don´t have. Another conclusion is that the attitude varies between ages, internet habit and which actors who provides the data.
The sharing economy has been growing continuously in the last decade thanks to the proliferation of internet-based platforms that allow people to disintermediate the traditional commercial channels and to share excess resources and trade with one another effectively at a reasonably low transaction cost. Whereas early peer-to-peer platforms were designed to enable file sharing and goods trading, we recently witness the emergence of a new breed of peer-to-peer platforms that are designed for ordinary service sharing. Ordinary services entail in tangible provisions and are defined as an economic activity that generates immaterial benefits and does not result in ownership of material goods. Based on a structured analysis of 41 internet-based rideshare platforms, we explore and layout the unique characteristics of peer-to-peer service sharing platforms based on three distinct temporal patterns that entail specific consequences for platform use as well as provide insights about their overall design imperative.
Radio frequency identification technology (RFID) has during the past decade seen an upwards trend among logistics companies in the supply chain. With increased e-commerce, demand for new and more efficient solutions are ever-increasing. RFID is a technology which Schmidt, Thoroe & Schumann (2013) call the next ‘evolutionary step for auto-identification technology’. The purpose of this research is to investigate and describe how previously found barriers for RFID adoption are perceived by Swedish logistic companies. The significance of barriers often accompanies the choice of investing or not. This thesis was conducted with mixed qualitative research design and used multiple case studies as a pilot study as well as a survey based on the results from the qualitative study to look at different logistic companies in Sweden. The authors collected data using semistructured interviews with a purposive sampling technique. Through thematic analysis, predetermined barrier themes emerged and that were strengthened by coding and categorising the transcripts. The survey data has been collected and analysed in IBM SPSS. The findings in this thesis conclude that RFID has matured over the last decade, and that cost is no longer the most significant barrier when it comes to implementing RFID technology into logistic processes. The most significant barrier now is lack of understanding and the popularity of barcodes. Lack of business case and an extensive knowledge gap surrounding RFID impedes Swedish logistic companies to adopt the technology. Another significant barrier was the popularity of barcodes. It has long been the industry standard, and companies are heavily invested in the infrastructure developed for barcodes. The target group for this research is both companies thinking of investing in RFID technology and RFID solution providers who want to know what challenges logistic companies face regarding RFID. For future studies, researchers should try to investigate how postal services could feasibly adopt this technology or analyse and compare barriers between different logistical segments within the supply chain.
User Experience is an important factor in improving IT system interfaces and work environments. The user may find difficulties using the interface because of different problems. This study is going to examine which problems a user may encounter while interacting with various interfaces. The literature informs the methodology used in this study. Qualitative method is used in the form of semi-structured interviews. The participants in the interviews answered questions regarding how well they knew about User Experience, which problems they found while interacting with the system, and how these problems could be resolved to lead to a better experience. The work environment is examined in this study as well. Previous research as well as the findings from this study serve as the base for analysis of the data which has demonstrated the variety of individual user experiences and difficulties while using various interfaces. The experience is highly individual and differs from person to person. However, the most frequent common problem was found to be inherent to the interfaces and information overload preventing users from easy interaction with interfaces.
Livestock farms have recently experienced a significant growth in their size and this is due to the increase in animal products. This has a technical impact on farmers' daily activities. As there are more animals, it becomes more difficult for the farmers to monitor, take care of and ensure the animals are treated in a healthy manner. The purpose of this study is to examine how farmers are affected by the use of the Precision Livestock Farming (PLF) systems and how they have come to accept the technology. The study will take up an important aspect of the impact and effect of PLF. The aim of the study is to find out how farmers are affected by PLF systems in regard to Ease of Use (EOU) and Usefulness. A total of five semi-structured interviews consisting of two researchers, one product advisor, one support worker and one farmer were conducted. An observation was also conducted along with the farmer and support worker. During the interviews, the participants answered our questions regarding PLF and its EOU and Usefulness. The data was analyzed using a thematic analysis and the results showed that PLF systems are important and useful but need further EOU development. Furthermore, the results showed that the poorly designed user interfaces impact the farmers’ attitude and intention towards using the system, which also affects their attitude towards the Usefulness of the PLF systems. The research confirms the importance of including farmers under the development phase of PLF systems. Lastly, this research might be the foundation for further research on how to improve and develop a more user-friendly PLF system.
The purpose of this study was to gain a more in-depth knowledge and understanding of the dating applications Tinder and Grindr and their structure regarding accented information and identity codes. I intended to gain an understanding of human perception and how this is applied to our modern dating applications. The main focus of the thesis was information hierarchies and visual hierarchies and how people perceive various visual elements. Another relevant aspect was the applications profile settings and self- presentation on the web. The method of the study was a qualitative content analysis with a deductive approach. The empirical material was categorized and summarized in a comparison between the two applications. In the study, discussions arose about the target group and the actual motives of the applications, which was a significant part of the result. Questions about gender, self and other specific identity aspects were also discussed during the study. This essay is written in Swedish.
IT Service Management (ITSM) is becoming a more relevant topic and the view of services is growing, therefore it is natural that new difficulties arise. When it comes to the manufacturing industry, it has not been seen as a difficult process to measure productivity. That is because it only refers to the ratio between output and input. However, when it comes to measuring the productivity of a service, many different factors have to be included. This is something several scientists agree to be a more difficult process. This difficulty is causing a lot of problems for businesses whose clients want to know if the service they are paying for is productive or not.
This study aimed at developing a simple prototype that makes it possible to measure the productivity of IT services. Based on previous research and the experience of another company from when they were measuring service productivity, a number of overall goals were set for the prototype. The objectives intended to counteract the problems identified in the previous research and thus the previous research served as a good starting point for the development of the prototype.
This study used design research to develop an innovative artifact, which got evalutated by experienced practitioners during two occasions. The purpose was to identify additional design principles that may be necessary in the development of this type of tool. The development and evaluation were conducted in two iterations. In the first iteration, there was a more informal discussion with an experienced ITSM practitioner about the artifact’s design, allowing for further development of the artifact. The evaluation conducted in the second iteration was more formal and was carried out using a focus group consisting of a number of practitioners with varied knowledge and experience relevant to the area. The obtained results were then compared to theory and previous research to contribute to the conclusions of the study.
The study resulted in two new design principles deemed necessary for this type of measurement tools. The informants and previous researchers’ thoughts about what they considered as important factors were the basis of the design principles. After the implementation of the prototype, there were problems that remained unsolved which were possible to present as future research opportunities. This study does not claim that its results make these kinds of tools complete. There needs to be more research on the subject to optimize the tool further and more design principles may be necessary. This study, on the other hand, may be the basis for future research or for practitioners who choose to implement or develop a similar tool.
The technical society we live in is in a constant state of advancement and we are continuallyintroduced to new innovative ways of mediating information through. Today, plenty of mediachannels exist, for organizations to use when they strive to reach larger groups of people, butto achieve web site success; researchers have stated that considerations of user preferencesimplemented in web design are crucial. This makes understanding and addressing whichcharacteristics will be valued from the moment a user enters a site something that isconsidered helpful to the web designer in order to maintain user traffic and create an interest. In other words, something to catch the user’s attention to create a good first impression is necessary.
The constant state of advancement of technology prevailing today has resulted in even morecomplex websites and a countless number of design principles to apply when designing forthe web. In spite of this, usability and visual appeal have remained central in prior research. To test these theories, a study was conducted by using a qualitative method in form of anexperiment consisting of eye tracking and an open-ended questionnaire. To perform the eyetracking the researchers created two mock-ups representing the main page of two differentwebsites. Each mock-up was developed with considerations towards two different designapproaches, one striving to achieve visual appeal and the other towards usability, todetermine which one the participants preferred.
The study contained 50 participants who performed the experiment and answered thequestionnaire. Results from the eye tracking were presented in gaze plots and heat maps andthe result from the questionnaire was presented and analyzed through coding by the researchers.
Final findings showed that the website preferred by most participants were the one developedwith the usable design approach. Additionally, the discussion presented the findings andreaches a conclusion of the study which finds connections between the chosen designapproach of the webpage and the participant’s choice of preferred webpage.
In this study, we examined the user experience of horizontal, vertical and faceted navigation on two beauty e-commerce websites. As a data collection method, we conducted user testing with the think aloud method and interviews. The results showed differences in how the users experienced the navigation at the beginning and after use. More specifically, the results showed that users initially expressed negative feelings related to the vertical navigation system, which became more positive after use. Moreover, the study showed that the user experience of the horizontal navigation system changed over time, where the initial experience was more positive than the end experience. The study also revealed various experiences and feelings related to faceted navigation which suggests that the user experience of faceted navigation depends on several different factors which needs to be further explored.
The purpose of this paper is defined to research the obstacles that hamper the implementation of blockchain technology in Swedish procurement. The identification of a knowledge gap in prior research related to this field is uncovered by substantial literature research. Previous research in this area is mainly conducted with an orientation towards the implementational benefits and design or implementation examples This paper thereby leads to a fulfillment of the discovered knowledge gap and contributes to the field. The research question; “What obstacles hamper the implementation of blockchain technology in the process of public procurement in Sweden?” Exploration of this is conducted through a qualitative research study with a geographical limit set to the country of Sweden. The study is conducted with the use of four different perspectives that consists of professionals with expertise in different fields. Obstacles that could hamper the merger between blockchain technology and procurement are identified, both using categories that are defined in a cross-perspective environment and individual obstacle topics. Further research ideas are also presented suggesting future studies surrounding the obstacle dynamics of this study.
Scrum is a framework used for the entertainment and development of complex systems (Schwaber & Sutherland 2016) and one of the most common agile project management methods at the present time. Agile methods have many advantages over traditional methods as they are more flexible. Many companies that previously used traditional methods, therefore choose to replace their old structure and its methods, to implement agile project management methods instead. This is a demanding task, especially for a larger company and imposes high demands on both management and other staff. Scrum is a framework that is highly dependent on communication. When introducing Scrum, it may be difficult to achieve the level of communication required to promote teamwork. Team members may in some cases need motivation to communicate and contribute to well-functioning teamwork.
The purpose of the study is to investigate the importance of continuous communication, motivation and teamwork among team members in relation to the introduction of Scrum into a larger company. In this study, a qualitative approach was used since data collection took place through semi-structured interviews with open qualitative research questions. Theoretical framework in the study is based on theories of agile methodology, types of agile project management methods, motivation for the introduction of agile project management methods, challenges associated with the introduction of these methods as well as on Scrum roles, activities and artifacts. The reason for the chosen theories is to gain an overview of agile project management methods, especially Scrum, and to investigate how continuous communication is to be secured in teams when introducing Scrum through questions about respondents' personal perceptions regarding motivation categories and teamwork characters. The study results demonstrate that regular meetings, training and exercises while maintaining strong team cohesion encourage continuous communication. Continuously, intrinsic motivation is the most fundamental aspect of a well-functioning team and important for promoting communication in the team and vice versa. The results of the study indicate that in order to establish effective teamwork, continuous communication and motivation between team members are required.
The purpose of this bachelor thesis is firstly to find out individuals' perceptions of an animation that has no other planned function than to be aesthetically appealing. Secondly, to investigate how users of a web page perceive an aesthetic animation and how this animation affects their user experience of, and dedication towards, the site. Two identical website prototypes – one with and without aesthetic animation – were was developed for use in this study. An experimental approach has been adopted and qualitative and quantitative approaches were combined in the collection of data. 13 strategically selected study participants were divided into one experiment group and one control group. The experiment group was shown the prototype with the aesthetic animation and the control group was shown the website without animation. The experiment methods consisted of observation, think-aloud and a questionnaire form. The form primarily focused on questions about the participants' perceptions and experiences of the website prototype. The results show clearly higher levels of positive user experience and levels of engagement towards the website prototype in the experiment group compared with the control group. In the experiment group, the majority of participants experienced a positive perception of the aesthetic animation and it also affected their user experiences of and levels of engagement with the website positively.
This study aims to answer the questions whether Content Management Systems follow basic information architecture principles whilst designing and developing its systems. The study outlines the three basic areas within information architecture; labeling, information structure and organization, and navigation systems and establishes hypothesis based on the theory surrounding these areas. The hypothesis were also used to define the information architecture principles that we used to test the Content Management Systems WordPress, Joomla!, and Drupal on. The study shows a couple of interesting things in its analysis of the Content Management Systems. Firstly that Content management systems follow basic information architecture principles. But they do so in different ways, but also in ways that are similar to each other. The use of labels, types of navigation systems and information structure were similar between the systems. The differences showed in the underlying systems where more local navigation systems changed and the information schemes used to categorize information differed. The study concluded that Content Management Systems information architecture are designed based on established principles.
Automatic crash notification to the nearest emergency center in case of a traffic accident will through the EU initiative eCall improve the safety for cars on European roads. eCall functionality could also increase the safety for vulnerable road users such as cyclists, but there is no technical implementation agreed upon for this purpose. We propose to use smartphones due to their widespread availability and no need for extra hardware. Today’s high-end smartphones are equipped with both GPS functionality and movement sensors. The aims of this study were to explore if smartphones can be used to collect cycling data of sufficient quality and to design and evaluate a crash detection algorithm (CDA) for cycling accidents. A Google Nexus 4 smartphone was chosen for the study. This device is equipped with a combined accelerometer and gyroscope chip. Over five hours of “normal” cycling data, i.e. without accidents/incidents, was collected. Six crash tests were performed using a simplified crash test dummy. In order to achieve a realistic user scenario the smartphone was allowed to be easily carried as in everyday use, i.e. the users were not required to fix it to the body. We used the total acceleration based on the sum of square of each direction to obtain a measure independent on smartphone orientation. For normal cycling this measure was found to momentarily be as high as 50 ms2. High levels were often due to handling of the smartphone. This prompted that an acceleration threshold alone is not sufficient for an accurate CDA. A marked rotation during a short time interval was found to be an important predictor for crashes. An accurate CDA was designed based on a combination of sensor data such as acceleration and rotation. The CDA detected all crashes and was subsequently evaluated in several hours of normal cycling without any false positive alarms.
Robo-advisory is a new service in the financial market and is designed to support financial decisions. Previous researches show that attitudes toward robo-advisory are an important aspect of their acceptance, and therefore this study is designed to investigate how the attitudes to robo-advisory is affected by five chosen factors. Previous studies also show a lack of financial literacy in young women leading to poor investment decisions. The purpose of this thesis is therefore to study how the factors influence the attitudes toward robo-advisors from a perspective of a young women in order to see if robo-advisory could be used as a substitute for financial literacy. This qualitative research was conducted on ten young women age 20-30. The collected data has then been transcribed, and then analyzed based on a content analysis with categories created for the purpose of the survey. The result shows that without financial literacy or previous use of robo-advisory in their social circle, the perception of risk and trust for robo-advisory is unlikely to change. It also shows that previous bad experience of robot-based systems affect the attitude toward robo-advisory negatively. This research can be useful in the design of robo-advisory and how to shape the service to get this target group to start using it. Because attitudes have a major impact on the use of the service, the results of this survey are a good basis for companies to relate to.
Today we are primarily using computers for communication. We communicate via computers as professionals and at our spare time. One growing context of computer use is when we as citizens communicating with authorities. This paper suggests communication criteria for evaluation of public e- services. The suggested criteria are derived from a communication perspective and applied in a case study for evaluation of an e-service. Communication between authorities and citizens are often communication intensive and consequently conditions and consequences of communication should be evaluated. The aim of the suggested communication criteria is to be a complement to established traditional usability criteria.
Abstract: This study is about course evaluation in Swedish higher education. Performing course evaluation is regulated in Swedish law. Despite this, only half of the courses are evaluated. The aim of this study is to understand why satisfactory course evaluations not are performed. Problems are identified from a student perspective and the paper provides proposals for reducing the problems. In order to tackle the problems an evaluation process model consisting of five phases is proposed. A main message is that there is need for an increased government from the university’s management levels to revise the incentives for performing a satisfactory course evaluation.
The proposal describes an ongoing research project called Data-Driven Innovation which comprises 14 researchers and 13 business partners. The project is characterized by partnership, collaboration, and interaction between the involved researchers and the business partners. The purpose of the project is to identify tools that can support the business partners in their efforts to exploit data in order to enhance service delivery and to create competitive advantage. The project is applying a socio-technical perspective in order to avoid a too one-sided technical focus. The proposal ends with presenting a number of challenges due to the increased complexity concerning the management of multiple business partners and researchers. The challenges are: maintaining the balance between competing interests, managing the problem of generalization, mutual learning, and ensure partnership throughout the project.
This thesis describes usability goals for method tools. Method tools are a type of CASE-tool aiming to support computer- and method-based information systems development. The aim of the thesis is to develop knowledge in order to suggest recommendations for achieving more usable method tools. The thesis takes an action perspective. An important starting-point in identifying usability goals are the existing modelling acts in the system development process specifying requirements for how method tools shall be developed. The thesis is performed as a prototyping approach embracing three steps. Output from a previous step is used as input to the following step. Further the thesis is based on studies of real cases where actors have interacted with method tools. In order to gain data I have used questionnaires, interviews and observations. The thesis embraces 12 usability goals for method tools. These goals are empirically generated and theoretically grounded. The identified usability goals are primary oriented towards the use situation system developer, method tool and task. Several usability goals can be characterised as more general and therefore are valid in areas beyond this use situation. The main contributions of this thesis are recommendations for developing method tools, a goal-means hierarchy presenting a composite description of usability attributes for method tools, characterising knowledge in a taxonomic form and a model which describes how modelling acts are related to usability goals.
