Kravställning på Incidenthanteringssystem2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

Creating and sustaining successful knowledge management in purposeful communities: summary of key experiences from pioneers2008Inngår i: Systems research and behavioral science, ISSN 1092-7026, E-ISSN 1099-1743, Vol. 25, nr 5, s. 615-626Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Based on research organized as a number of workshops, case studies and interviews with experienced practitioners as well as academics, we present in this report the most important findings on how to create and sustain successful knowledge management in a community environment. The cases, workshops and interviews deal specifically with the Microsoft Solutions Sharing Network (SSN) program, but the findings, conclusions and preliminary recommendations can be applied more generally to the development of any knowledge management community. A key conclusion is that the bulk of efforts toward creating successful knowledge management communities focus oil less technical, or softer aspects like leadership, culture, social settings and value of participation. However, these are essential, but not sufficient, ingredients for success. Technical issues, issues regarding development and customization of the tools used to facilitate knowledge management (for example, the SSN web portal), and emerging legal issues surrounding the sharing of intellectual property UP) may be perceived as somewhat less important to the participants, but are nevertheless key factors in the long term success of these communities. It is also concluded that the foundation for successful collaboration is primarily laid in the initial phases of community development. A community must make a positive impression oil its participants from the very beginning because most people will not give it a second chance. In this report we have highlighted three important areas to consider when establishing portals for knowledge management: Leadership, Purpose and Process/Infrastructure. A leadership with high credibility in the subject is needed to lead the participants in the right direction, manage the cultural processes and to make sure that relevant content can be found. Initially it is the content that brings people to a specific community. Thus, there has to be some common purpose that not only needs to be in congruence with the professional role of the participants but also be inspiring for them as well. Additionally, the community should have some sort of process that the participants can understand and suits the way they would like to interact. Face-to-face meetings and networking activities create trust which is important to get the process started. Language, IT platform, support and rules governing the contribution, creation and sharing of 'knowledge' for the community are other concerns that need to be considered within the process. Turning the Internet Around: e-Me: The Students Ideal e-Service2006Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Today students, as many other groups of citizens, are offered, indeed required to use, a rapidly increasing number of e-Services. They range from school and course sites to interactions with authorities as well as companies offering student discounts. This paper reports on a pioneering project in Sweden with a radical approach to this, namely to issue the student with a electronic assistant, an e-Me, that schools, authorities and companies are required to address when interacting with the student. A larger number of students and partners, universities, companies and authorities, have been engaged in the design of such an e-Me. It might be thought of as turning the internet around – rather than having students keep track of sites, they will have to come to the students and interact with them in the way specified by them.

Work on Spoken (Multimodal) Language Corpora in South Africa2010Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This paper describes past, ongoing and planned work on the collection and transcription of spoken language samples for all the South African official languages and as part of this the training of researchers in corpus linguistic research skills. More specifically the work has involved (and still involves) establishing an international corpus linguistic network linked to a network hub at a UNISA website and the development of research tools, a corpus research guide and workbook for multimodal communication and spoken language corpus research. As an example of the work we are doing and hope to do more of in the future, we present a small pilot study of the influence of English and Afrikaans on the 100 most frequent words in spoken Xhosa as this is evidenced in the corpus of spoken interaction we have gathered so far. Other planned work, besides work on spoken language phenomena, involves comparison of spoken and written language and work on communicative body movements (gestures) and their relation to speech.

Hesitation in Intercultural Communication: Some Observations and Analyses on Interpreting Shoulder Shrugging2010Inngår i: Computing and Communication: Lecture Notes in Computer Science, (LNCS) / [ed] T. Ishida, Springer , 2010, s. 55-70Kapittel i bok, del av antologi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

This paper concerns the different ways in which hesitation, and hesitation related phenomena like uncertainty, doubt and other phenomena where lack of knowledge is involved are expressed in different cultures. The paper focuses especially on shoulder shrugging as a signal of hesitation or uncertainty, and starts from the observation that shoulder shrugging has different interpretations depending on the interlocutor’s cultural background. It is not commonly used in Eastern cultures while in Western cultures it is a sign of uncertainty and ignorance. The paper reports a small study on the differences in interpretation of a particular video tape gesture, and draws some preliminary conclusions of how this affects intercultural communication between human interlocutors and between humans and conversational agents.

The analysis of embodied communicative feedback in multimodal corpora: a prerequisite for behavior simulation2008Inngår i: Language resources and evaluation, ISSN 1574-020X, E-ISSN 1574-0218, Vol. 41, nr 3-4, s. 255-272Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Communicative feedback refers to unobtrusive (usually short) vocal or bodily expressions whereby a recipient of information can inform a contributor of information about whether he/she is able and willing to communicate, perceive the information, and understand the information. This paper provides a theory for embodied communicative feedback, describing the different dimensions and features involved. It also provides a corpus analysis part, describing a first data coding and analysis method geared to find the features postulated by the theory. The corpus analysis part describes different methods and statistical procedures and discusses their applicability and the possible insights gained with these methods.

    Abstract [en]

In this paper, we describe the construction of the 14-million-word Nepali National Corpus (NNC). This corpus includes both spoken and written data, the latter incorporating a Nepali match for FLOB and a broader collection of text. Additional resources within the NNC include parallel data (English–Nepali and Nepali–English) and a speech corpus. The NNC is encoded as Unicode text and marked up in CES-compatible XML. The whole corpus is also annotated with part-of-speech tags. We describe the process of devising a tagset and retraining tagger software for the Nepali language, for which there were no existing corpus resources. Finally, we explore some present and future applications of the corpus, including lexicography, NLP, and grammatical research.

Self Services and Disservices: Improving Avatars with Co-Design2014Doktoravhandling, monografi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

Corporations and government agencies that use Avatars claim there are substantial benefits for using them in their respective organizations; including 24/7 service availability, quick answers without a phone queue, and improved consistency in the responses provided. “There are also potential cost savings by having an Avatar answering questions compared to using personnel” (Lind and Salomonson, 2006). However, these benefits may not be great enough as the lack of possible human communication may lead to alienation between individuals and organisations. Furthermore, a robot may “miss out” on business opportunities that a human would act on. A robot will not hear and understand nuances in speech, with the risk that a potentially problematic situation may not be adequately resolved, leading to dissatisfaction with products and services delivered. Many companies measure the satisfaction with Avatars by analysing question and answer logs to see if the Avatar appears to give satisfactory answers. Few of these companies have actually asked their customers (e.g. IKEA and SAS until recently) what they really feel about the quality of the answers they receive. User Centered Design, Participatory Design and other methods are the preferred ways of developing such systems, but these do not include all stakeholders. This thesis addresses this exclusion of all stakeholders by applying a co-design research approach for developing avatars for e-Services. Case studies from Mark Municipality, Sweden and Scandinavian Airlines Systems (SAS) are presented in this thesis showing how improvements of service quality aspects with Avatars can be managed by applying a four-step Co-Design research approach. From the first step of Co-Design, through interviews, log analysis and a channel survey, findings show that the failed dialogues with Avatars Eva (SAS) and Elin (Mark) are mainly concerned with five factors: interactivity; dialogue capability; consistency; knowledge; and synonyms. In the second step of carrying out customer workshops, a number of ideal scenarios are suggested for the Avatars to perform better. In the third step, SAS decision makers decided to implement the first three scenarios: Eva’s synonyms, knowledge and consistency. Mark decision makers decided to shut down their Avatar Elin, as they did not believe they had the necessary resources. In the fourth step, another channel survey was carried out for SAS as well as a new log analysis in order to know the impact of the redevelopment of the above three scenarios. An important result of the study was that the company adopted the continuous use of Co-Design as an approach to continuous improvement of the service quality performed by the Avatar Eva. This, for example, led to an increase of 14 percentage points on the users overall satisfaction level. The results also open a new set of questions framing the relation and transformation between Co-Design as a research approach for knowledge creation and Co-Design as a method for innovation and service quality improvements. This thesis also presents an Extended Co-Design Model, which illustrates how Co-Design inspires SAS staff. In addition, the staff of the supplier of the Avatar use it for other functions within and without SAS.

Successful use of avatar/e-services: powerful, but needs a knowledge manager with proper methods2011Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

In this paper we are presenting some theoretical background, some practical applications and some future scenarios of the use of the human being as a metaphor for design and implementation of e-services/avatars. The main conclusion is that e-services/avatars technology is a powerful concept but without a new profession as knowledge manager in the background, there’s a big risk for failure. We are also presenting a co-design model as a tool for the knowledge manager.

The Co-design practices are carried out in different fields of studies. Some of the key advocates of Co-design originate from business. Abstract [en]

This bachelor thesis examines the access and pedagogic roles of the school library room at a primary school with students in preschool class up to ninth grade. As of 2017 the school library has new premises with the goal of making the school library more available for all students at the school. The purpose of the study was to gain knowledge about primary school students access to the library room, its role and how the room is used for pupils learning by teachers. The method used was semi-structured interviews with the librarian and two teachers from each of the three primary school stages. In the study I adapted Elisabeth Tallaksen Rafste's theory of school libraries as social systems and structures. I related to the influence of teachers and libraries on how they affect the role of the library room through their view of the library. The study shows that the library room is kept in high regard by the teacher, as well as being more available to the pupils than before. Due to circumstances at the school, only the older student had individual access to the library while the younger had to be accompanied by a teacher. None of the teachers use the room for pedagogic activities, though some see pedagogic roles in the room, such as student learning through social interactions. The room has both a learning and leisure role. An unexpected result was the teachers appreciation for and close bond to the librarian.

    Abstract [en]

Data collection is a topic that affects every person that uses various Internet services and has been a current topic the past year among individuals and the actors that collects data. It concerns actors collecting and storing personal data from users that either have or have no knowledge about it. The Cambridge Analytica-scandal which affected over 50 million users on Facebook initiated a discussion which concerns if data collection is right or wrong, but also how actors handle personal data and how it affects the integrity. With the enforcement of General Data Protection Regulation GDPR the 25th of May which will affect actors involved with data collection or usage. The regulation is about how actors can store data and use it. The regulation will also provide users the right to demand to be removed from actor’s databases. There has been some research on opinions among users concerning data collection, but not how they can be different with the knowledge of GDPR. So how is the attitude towards data collection among internet users? Do internet users apply services to prevent data collection? Do they even know about GDPR? A survey was performed to answer these questions and where the answers were put together in the form of statistic data. The purpose of this pre-study is to examine what the attitude is towards data collection. The study also examines how technical knowledge, age and knowledge about GDPR can be related to answers given in the survey. Based on the empirical data and identified relations between measurable variables the study’s conclusions can be made: The attitude to data collection is significant between users who have knowledge about GDPR and those how don´t have. Another conclusion is that the attitude varies between ages, internet habit and which actors who provides the data.

Hur påverkas systemutvecklingsprocessen av implementeringen av GDPR2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

On May 25th 2018 a new general data protection regulation called GDPR took effect. The regulation contains rules regarding usage, storage and handling of data from individuals resident within The European Union. The new regulation caused big headlines regarding the impact GDPR would have on the affected enterprises and organizations. One aspect that hasn’t been mentioned considerably is how GDPR has and will affect the system development process. The difficulty with implementing GDPR has shown to have its origin in the fact that the regulation is fairly new which means that it’s still ambiguous and difficult to apply. That means that there has been room for different takes on GDPR and its rules which has contributed to various opinions on how GDPR should be implemented.

The purpose of this thesis was to study how the implementation of GDPR has affected the system development process among enterprises and organizations. The method that has been used in the thesis is a qualitative interview study of two enterprises. The acquired data have been collected mainly from four interviewing persons, two from each enterprise. The data collected from the interviews has been analyzed with the method grounded theory. The conclusion of the thesis is that the system development process has been affected by the implementation of GDPR. The regulation is however not believed to affect the enterprises to the extent that any extensive restructuring has been necessary. Based on the result from the interviews it is rather believable that GDPR actually had a positive effect among the enterprises. The thesis also resulted in a model which illustrates the system development process and the aspects of GDPR considered to have a substantial effect.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

In recent years the Swedish Police Force (SPF) have encountered greater demands on availability and 24/7 services when dealing with errands that are regarded as low priority compared to regular police work, e.g. collecting tips from the public. One attempt to meet these increasing demands was the development of a mobile communications platform that allowed the public to communicate easily with the SPF using their own mobile phones by sending SMS and MMS. The focus of this paper is on the early phases of development of this m-service, in particular, on the specific technical issues such as interoperability and standards used by the actors on the scene affecting the development of mobile information systems. The learning experiences are as follows: First, mobile communication platforms have a large potential for contributing to the field of emergency management information systems since they can be based on open and nationally accepted standards. Second, global and national standards for sending multimedia messages are not always truly standardized. Operators and mobile phone manufacturers make minor alterations and interpretations of the standard and thereby some of the benefits found in standards disappear. Third, when developing mobile information systems we suggest and recommend that the analysis phase should be enhanced compared to traditional system development, and it should address the interoperability between mobile phones on one hand and operators on the other hand.

The effect of a Computerised Decision Support System (CDSS) on compliance with the prehospital assessment process: results of an interrupted time-series study2014Inngår i: BMC Medical Informatics and Decision Making, ISSN 1472-6947, E-ISSN 1472-6947, Vol. 14, nr 70Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

BACKGROUND:Errors in the decision-making process are probably the main threat to patient safety in the prehospital setting. The reason can be the change of focus in prehospital care from the traditional "scoop and run" practice to a more complex assessment and this new focus imposes real demands on clinical judgment. The use of Clinical Guidelines (CG) is a common strategy for cognitively supporting the prehospital providers. However, there are studies that suggest that the compliance with CG in some cases is low in the prehospital setting. One possible way to increase compliance with guidelines could be to introduce guidelines in a Computerized Decision Support System (CDSS). There is limited evidence relating to the effect of CDSS in a prehospital setting. The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of CDSS on compliance with the basic assessment process described in the prehospital CG and the effect of On Scene Time (OST).METHODS:In this time-series study, data from prehospital medical records were collected on a weekly basis during the study period. Medical records were rated with the guidance of a rating protocol and data on OST were collected. The difference between baseline and the intervention period was assessed by a segmented regression.RESULTS:In this study, 371 patients were included. Compliance with the assessment process described in the prehospital CG was stable during the baseline period. Following the introduction of the CDSS, compliance rose significantly. The post-intervention slope was stable. The CDSS had no significant effect on OST.CONCLUSIONS:The use of CDSS in prehospital care has the ability to increase compliance with the assessment process of patients with a medical emergency. This study was unable to demonstrate any effects of OST.

Anskaffning, värdering och utvärdering av IT-investeringar2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Almost all businesses are affected by the current trend of digitalization. To stay competitive, they need to find the right balance between innovation and exploitation. IT-investments could result in increased efficiency, as well as other competitive advantages. To be sure that the IT- investments contributes to these expected advantages, the businesses should evaluate their IT- investment. For the systems to continue to create value and to avoid the use of outdated systems, it’s also of major importance the IT-systems are assessed at a regular basis.

The aim of this thesis is to investigate on what basis IT-investments are made, as well as what approaches organizations tend to adopt while valuating and evaluating their systems. The study was conducted through a qualitative method and the data-collection was made through semi- structured interviews with respondents from 6 different businesses who occupied positions such as chief information officer, chief digital officer and project manager. The part of empirics and analysis explains the results of the study and compares the empirical data with theory.

The result of the study shows that IT-investments often are made to match the digitalization of society and that such investments are affected by factors such as competition and customer’s requests. The result also reveals that acquisition, through Business Case, often is made to decide whether the IT-investment should carry on or discontinue. Furthermore, the result shows that the work with system management often is conducted in a controlled and thoroughly way, but that the work with evaluation isn’t sufficiently comprehensive; which the businesses is aware of and wishes to do in greater extent.

Den moderna banken: Tillämpning av Artificiell Intelligens i bankverksamhet2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a growing digitization technique appears in many contexts as something new and foreign. AI is considered by many as the driving force in the future of digitalization. The finance industry is one of the industries that may be affected since they already have several digitization tools today. Banks have an important function in our society and therefore it’s important for companies and also consumers, to understand what the application of AI can offer.

The purpose of this study is to generate a greater understanding of how Artificial Intelligence (AI) is being used in Swedish banks today, which ethics- and regulatory aspects that can affect the implementation of AI and how banks take the future use of AI in consideration. The study is based on a qualitative method where five explorative and semi structured interviews with different banks have been conducted. Respondents consists of two niche banks and three more established banks where 35-60 minutes interviews have been done while the respondents explained how they use AI in daily activities, how they consider ethical aspects regarding the use of AI and how they see the future use of AI in daily activities. This study has come to the conclusion that the banks use AI in different ways and that they value AI differently. Well established banks work more with IT-support for the organization where support is of great importance while the niche banks works with AI from a more holistic perspective with credit- and loan processes in focus. It appears that banks also want to use AI in consideration of money laundering and compliance. This study also presents how banks take the law, ethical aspects and work environment in consideration and how these factors is affected or not affected with the application of AI.

Peer-to-Peer Service Sharing Platforms: Driving Share and Share Alike on a Mass-Scale2013Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The sharing economy has been growing continuously in the last decade thanks to the proliferation of internet-based platforms that allow people to disintermediate the traditional commercial channels and to share excess resources and trade with one another effectively at a reasonably low transaction cost. Whereas early peer-to-peer platforms were designed to enable file sharing and goods trading, we recently witness the emergence of a new breed of peer-to-peer platforms that are designed for ordinary service sharing. Ordinary services entail in tangible provisions and are defined as an economic activity that generates immaterial benefits and does not result in ownership of material goods. Based on a structured analysis of 41 internet-based rideshare platforms, we explore and layout the unique characteristics of peer-to-peer service sharing platforms based on three distinct temporal patterns that entail specific consequences for platform use as well as provide insights about their overall design imperative.

Inscribing Interpretive Flexibility of Context Data in Ubiquitous Computing Environments: An Action Research Study of Vertical Standard Development.2009Inngår i: International Journal of Advanced Pervasive and Ubiquitous Computing, ISSN 1937-965X, E-ISSN 1937-9668, Vol. 1, nr 2, s. 1079-1097Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Ubiquitous computing environments grant organizations a multitude of dynamic context data emanating from embedded and mobile components. Such data may enhance organizations’ understanding of the different contexts in which they act. However, extant IS literature indicates that the utility of context data is frequently hampered by a priori interpretations of context embodied within the acquiring technologies themselves. Building on a 5-year canonical action research study within the Swedish transport industry, this paper reports an attempt to shift the locus of interpretation of context data by rearranging an assemblage of embedded, mobile, and stationary technologies. This was done by developing a vertical standard as a means to inscribe interpretive flexibility of context data. With the objective to extend the current understanding of how to enable cross-organizational access to reinterpretable context data, the paper contributes with an analysis of existing design requirements for context-aware ecosystems. This analysis reveals the complexity of accomplishing collaborative linkages between socio-technical elements in ubiquitous computing environments, and highlights important implications for research and practice.

    Abstract [en]

This study aimed primarily at investigating if the role of age was important regarding password management and password habits of different users. Despite extensive research in password management, the problem remains that users create insecure passwords, leaving personal information and systems vulnerable to attackers. In order to examine users’ different password habits in different age categories, a multi-strategy study was conducted, which consisted of two methods, with both a questionnaire and interviews. The areas discussed in the study were whether the age was important on the user's password habits and the knowledge different users had about attacker's different methods. The study also discusses how the user thought about the creation of passwords in comparison with recommendations from existing studies of how a secure password is created and how the user remembered their password. The results of the surveys show no correlation between the user's age and password habits. However, a possible solution to the problem is finally discussed, as both previous studies and this study proves users today lack knowledge of secure passwords and lack of password habits.

Dokumentdatabaser i praktiken: En studie om användandet av MongoDB2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Skrivhjälpmedlen som användes i studien är;

    ● Ordprediktion

    ● Ordprediktion med ett lättläst lexikon

    ● Tangentbordsprediktion

    ● Ordprediktion med tangentbordsprediktion

Impact of Technological Devices on Mathematical Skills: A Technological Adaption Perspective on Mathematics Education2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

We live in a world where the use of technology plays a key role in our daily activities. Many professions rely on the use of technology to enable them to provide a better, faster, and the best of services to their clients. Due to the numerous benefits technology provides, there has been the need for its adoption into the educational sector to make learning easier for students. Through technology adoption students and teachers can get easy access to online resources. Students can study at their own pace and share resources with their peers. Despite the fact that the use of technological devices in the educational sector comes with some benefits, its introduction into the classroom at the elementary stage, especially in solving mathematics problems, has raised several controversies among stakeholders in the educational sector. There are those who are of the view that, the use of technological devices for computational purposes at the elementary stage will cause students to become reliant on them without using their mind to solve simple mathematical problems. Other stakeholders, however, think otherwise, they believe the use of technological devices used in teaching mathematics at the elementary school enhances student problem-solving skills. In this study, we determined the impact of technology adoption on mathematical skills in elementary schools in Pakistan. This research was conducted using semi-structured interviews and experiment between two elementary schools in Pakistan where one school believes in the adoption of technology in teaching and learning mathematics and the other school does not believe in the adoption of technology in teaching and learning mathematics. Students were chosen from grade 8 who were within the same age group and living within the same community for this study because they are within a transition stage from elementary school to upper secondary school and it is important to know how the use and non-use of technology have affected their mathematical capabilities and whether it was important for schools to adopt or not to adopt the use of technological devices in mathematics instructions. The results of the study indicate that the use of technological devices in solving mathematics problems at the elementary school has a greater negative impact than a positive impact on student computational skills and this affects the adoption of technological devices in mathematics instructions at most elementary school in Pakistan. The impact of technology plays a key role in technology adoption for potential adopters in developing countries and for this reason when potential adopters do not see the positive impact of technology from those using them; it serves as a barrier for the potential adopter.

Risker med Smarta Hem: En kvantitativ studie om individens riskmedvetenhet2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Smart homes are a growing digital phenomenon worldwide. It is widely used in everyday life by many people and the number of users increases significantly the more the area develops. The smart home contributes to many advantages both from an environmental perspective and from a comfort perspective, but as with most digital solutions, smart homes also have a backside, in the form of security problems. There are many risks associated with using a smart home, and the purpose of the study is to find out to what extent the individuals are aware of the risks associated with smart homes, and to find out which risks affect the individuals the most, based on their own point of view. The questions underlying the study are as follows: "To what extent is the individual aware of the risks associated with smart homes?" and "What risks have the greatest impact on the individual?". In order to answer these questions, the study has been carried out through a quantitative method in which a questionnaire was designed, the survey presented, among other things, the risks that were chosen from the theory where we asked the respondents how conscious they are about these risks. The result shows that the majority of respondents are aware that there are risks with smart homes. The study shows that the greatest knowledge existed about the risks of eavesdropping and traffic analysis, even for those who were not users of smart homes and regardless of age group. As for the other risks, it is users of smart homes who have the greatest knowledge about the risks and also individuals aged 30-39. Eavesdropping is the risk that the individuals consider to be the most and least serious risk. Future research in the field can be to find out how the users protect themselves against the risks and to carry out a similar study with a qualitative method to get more nuanced answers.

Sequence-to-sequence learning of financial time series in algorithmic trading2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Predicting the behavior of financial markets is largely an unsolved problem. The problem hasbeen approached with many different methods ranging from binary logic, statisticalcalculations and genetic algorithms. In this thesis, the problem is approached with a machinelearning method, namely the Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) variant of Recurrent NeuralNetworks (RNNs). Recurrent neural networks are artificial neural networks (ANNs)—amachine learning algorithm mimicking the neural processing of the mammalian nervoussystem—specifically designed for time series sequences. The thesis investigates the capabilityof the LSTM in modeling financial market behavior as well as compare it to the traditionalRNN, evaluating their performances using various measures.

Modeling Energy Consumption of Lock-Free Queue Implementations2015Inngår i: 2015 IEEE International Parallel and Distributed Processing Symposium, IPDPS 2015, Hyderabad, India, May 25-29, 2015, IEEE Computer Society, 2015, s. 229-238Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This paper considers the problem of modelling the energy behaviour of lock-free concurrent queue data structures. Our main contribution is a way to model the energy behaviour of lock-free queue implementations and parallel applications that use them. Focusing on steady state behaviour we decompose energy behaviour into throughput and power dissipation which can be modeled separately and later recombined into several useful metrics, such as energy per operation. Based on our models, instantiated from synthetic benchmark data, and using only a small amount of additional application specific information, energy and throughput predictions can be made for parallel applications that use the respective data structure implementation. To model throughput we propose a generic model forlock-free queue throughput behaviour, based on combination of the dequeuers' throughput and enqueuers' throughput. To model power dissipation we commonly split the contributions from the various computer components into static, activation and dynamic parts, where only the dynamic part depends on the actual instructions being executed. To instantiate the models a synthetic benchmark explores each queue implementation over the dimensions of processor frequency and number of threads. Finally, we show how to make predictions of application throughput and power dissipation for a parallel application using lock-free queue requiring only a limited amount of information about the application work done between queue operations. Our case study on a Mandelbrot application shows convincing prediction results.

    Abstract [en]

This research report aims to provide a picture of Sweden's current attitude and approach to future digitization of the election system and how this change process can take place. It also aims to provide answers to our formulated research questions:

What is people's attitude to the current election system and future digitization of the election system?

How could the current Swedish electoral system be changed with the help of digitalisation and what could these changes look like?

Furthermore, it describes the methods and tools used for the collection of information and thus provides an accurate basis of the current situation through a summary of previous research on the subject through a literature study. Furthermore, the method chapter describes in detail the collection of information that was done through a quantitative and a qualitative study. First, an investigation is done on the current situation at the Swedish electoral authority. This investigation then forms the basis of the online survey that collected information from private individuals to give an understanding of their view and attitude on an electronic voting system. The results of this information collection are compiled and then presented in our results. This result is then discussed in our method chapter where we ourselves reflect on the information and responses we collected. In our discussion we also give examples of whether and how the introduction of a digital election system can and should take place. We do this by identifying different levels of digitization based on the results and presenting them together with a number of identified criteria. Finally, this research report can serve as a basis for answering the question of and in what way Sweden should introduce a digital election system.

The majority of webpages online that uses electronic commerce or in any way can benefit from storing the customers information uses cookies. Cookies can be sold or exchanged between organizations to increase their profit and range. In 2011 a provision regarding all organizations using cookies were implemented. Every internet user visiting these pages had to be notified about their use of cookies immediately. New laws are established in order to control or regulate the exertion of other people’s personal information at the same pace as cookies are further developed. The next law to be established is GDPR, General Data Protection Regulation, which will be focused on in this thesis.

The purpose of this study is to explore the phenomenon of cookie-use and how it affects internet users and organizations in synergy with the GDPR-law. To achieve the desired result a mixed method has been applied involving both interviews and a survey. The interviews consisted of pre-determined questions and dynamic follow-up questions. Three different organizations participated in the interviews, an university, an organization using e-business and a media agency. The survey consisted of a few mandatory closed questions. The distribution of the survey led to right above 130 respondents.

The gained results from the use of a quantitative methods hinted that barely half of the respondents knew what a cookie actually was. Several of the participants were curious about learning more about the phenomenon while a lower percentage did not consider it important. Knowledge or ignorance regarding cookies turned out to have a great impact on the respondent’s comfortableness and behavior online. The results from the qualitative method showed that the organizations working with cookies will be affected by GDPR.

Following thesis will contribute to the field of informatics by consequently process the empiric data collected with support from theoretic competences. It will contribute as a source of information regarding cookies within information technology.

Microtransactions and lotteries in video-games2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Microtransactions are part of a business model used almost extensively in the video-gaming industry where developers offer virtual goods or features via micropayments. The concept is relatively new and still unknown to many but deeply rooted in modern video-game developers’ business strategies. Microtransactions are found in smartphone applications, online games played on computer or gaming consoles, and while the concept might be unfamiliar to many, the odds are most have encountered it.

Most published games will feature in-game purchases where users have to option to purchase features, items or content for a small amount of money. A microtransaction in its most simplistic form is ad-removal, here developers offer the user a way to get rid of ads by charging a small amount, like $.99. While one microtransaction may seem insignificant, multiple impulsive purchases can quickly add up to considerable sums. This has resulted in the use of microtransactions becoming the most profitable business strategy for game developers.

This study seeks to describe what stimulates a person to complete a purchase by using the components of hedonic motivation from the HMSAM theory leading to the research question: Which hedonic motivations induce use of microtransaction systems and does it vary by age? To research the phenomena a quantitative questionnaire was formed based on hedonic motivations, including three motivations added by the author, gathering responses from 398 video-game players having completed a microtransaction purchase.

After analyzing the results, some components protruded more than others while the consensus suggested that the influence of hedonic motivation was comparatively low. The argument for this outcome may be that players see in-game items as objects of real-world value, making the microtransaction system within a game a utilitarian-motivation system. The general attitude towards microtransactions appeared to be poor which contradicts some elements of previous research while supporting others.

This thesis will contribute to the field of informatics by complementing the traditional technology acceptance model (TAM) with hedonic motivations, as proposed by Lowry et al. in 2013. The author of this study argue it is a modernized way of researching intentions to use asort of system.

Adoption of mobile payment methods, a challenge for the senior citizens of Sweden?2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

For the first time ever, mobile payments in Sweden have overtaken cash as the preferred method of payment when it comes to monthly payments. With cashless payments growing in Sweden and all over the world it is clear that mobile payment methods are going to increase in our everyday lives. As elders tend to have more difficulties learning and understanding software, it is not unlikely that this will affect the adoption of mobile payment methods. As cash is rapidly disappearing as a payment method in Sweden it is important to gain insight into which factors affect the acceptance of mobile payment methods among senior citizens, as they are the most frequent users of cash today. This is a qualitative case study where five seniors have been interviewed about their opinions on mobile payments based on a theoretical model of mobile adoption consisting of eleven variables. The interviews came to center around the Swedish mobile payment application Swish as it was the only mobile payment service that the participants were aware of and had experience using. The study’s goal is to gain knowledge of what variables are of importance to the senior consumers when deciding whether or not to adopt a mobile payment system. The main findings of the study are that the variables: social influence, attractiveness of alternatives and trust are the variables that have been seen to affect the senior citizens' adoption of mobile payment the most.
