Abstract [en]

The aim of this work is to achieve function through decoration in order to argument against the functionalism heritage and tradition of dividing function and decoration into each others opposites, and to offer alternatives to current expressions of functional fashion within the field of accessories. The main focus have been on achieving the function of adaptability in body relation and volume within the product field of bags. Collected samples of handmade lace objects have been analyzed from a functional point of view, and the functional principles found in these have been translated into digital patterns cut into textile materials through laser cutter. Through this method a system for adaptable bags have been developed, allowing the user to adapt volume or body relation depending on need and situation. From this system in turn a collection of nine example prototypes have been developed, showcasing different possibilities in construction and expression.
