More than words? : Vision Varberg 2025, The role of a cultural center, Komedianten, in an urban development project (English)
Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to come to an understanding about the city Varberg and its municipality’s vision. The goal for their vision is to become the creative center of the west coast. We will look at the role that has been given to their cultural center where the main public library resides. We will also look at the ways in which the vision has affected the cultural center and the compability between it and the vision.

The empirical material has been collected through documents in relation to the shaping of the vision, and to the policy of the libraries in the municipality. It has also been collected through seven semistructured interviews. The participants are people who are responsible for the development of the vision, people who are involved with the municipality’s cultural policy, politicians and employees at the cultural center. The material has mainly been analyzed by using a tool constructed with inspiration from Jenny Johannisson's theory of three discourses in cultural policy.

One finding is that the perceptions of the vision’s content and meaning differ when subjects like culture and creativity are brought up. Another finding is the tendency that the cultural center’s view on culture might contradict the vision’s. One could argue that a true implementation of the vision might change the librarian role. This is due to the fact that much of the content in the vision, besides the attention on catchwords like sustainability and participation, resonates with economic growth and place marketing.
