This paper outlines the aims and strategy for the work with copyright guidance at Karlstad University Library. New technology and delivery mechanisms increase copyright and intellectual property considerations. Due to the complications and general confusion about copyright there is a growing need for official support in copyright issues. There are weaknesses and gaps or even incorrect knowledge of many key issues. There is also a need of further education about the complicated use of copyrighted works in education. Libraries have an important role as we already interact with all sectors of the university. We are working on multiple fronts with course reserves, interlibrary loans, databases, e-journals etc. Library employees have in general a good understanding of copyright relevant to higher education uses and can improve services related to copyright. The paper presents how the library at Karlstad University has begun to work more actively with copyright guidance in improving course reserves. Beginning with looking at the reading lists and printed compendiums, subject librarians have started to give advice about copyright and how teachers can avoid the pitfalls of copyright. The aim is to encourage teachers to use electronic resources and make course literature more easily available for students. 2 The interest in copyright issues has increased due to a new copying agreement with Higher Education Institutions. Even though the library at Karlstad University has for many years been giving advice about copyright it is important to define its role with regard to copyright and copyright enforcement. Libraries need to have a more systematic approach to copyright guidance and establish collegiality with faculty and administration. The relation with legal counsels is important and can be one way of getting legitimacy. Librarians can help in locating alternative resources, especially licensed content and give advice on how to digitize for electronic reserves. Libraries can also help in preventing infringement claims. If the library takes responsibility for copyright guidance relating to course planning, plagiarism or other services, it will improve the institutional view of the library.
