Internal communication during a parental leave : A quantitative study of how communication with an employeris experienced during a parental leave (English)
Abstract [en]

Research on internal communication in organizations oftenfocus on communication in the various relationships in theworkplace, but there is very little research on communicationwith those who are on parental leave. The aim of this study is to examine the subjectiveexperiences of the employees on a parental leave regardingthe communication with their employer and to understandhow, when and if the employees wish communicate withtheir employers during their parental leave. By using theorieson role identification and employees as ambassadeurs fortheir organisations, I have identified and researched factorsthat influence and are influenced by the communication withand to the employees on parental leave, and the humanresources perspective provides a view of how to includeemployees on parental leave in communication with and asresources for an organization.A web survey was conducted which shows that theemployees' interest in communicating with their employerduring a parental leave is moderate. A majority experiencethat their employer has weak or no interest incommunicating with them. Communication with colleaguesis more frequent and uses more channels thancommunication with the employer which indicates theimportance of the informal communication. A majority seethemselves as resources for the employer, most of them findit important to share organizational information and theyexperience to a greater extent that the employer wants tocommunicate with them.
