ChatGPT, generative AI and school libraries : A study of generative AI tools in school librarians' practices (English)
Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to gain insight into school librarians’ practices regarding whether, and how, they are impacted by the presence of generative AI tools, such as ChatGPT. The main purposes are to determine the extent to which generative AI tools are used by school librarians and whether secondary school students’ use of generative AI tools impacts practices in school libraries. The methods used in this study include semi-structured interviews and a qualitative thematic analysis. In this study six school librarians at Swedish secondary schools were interviewed. To analyse the interviews, Roger’s theory of Diffusion of innovations was used. Our findings indicate that the attitude towards ChatGPT is mostly negative concerning school librarians’ practices. However, some school librarians are using some language and image models in their work and find them useful.
