Moral Owl or Member of an Evil Cult : a Thematic Analysis of the Libraries and the Librarians Role in Contemporary Fantasy Literature for Children (English)
Abstract [en]
In this paper, we look at the role of the library and the librarian within fantasy literature for children by doing a thematic analysis and using Michael Gorman’s (2015) eight common principles of librarianship as a theoretical framework. These principles are; stewardship, service, intellectual freedom, rationalism, literacy and learning, equity of access, privacy and democracy. In total, we have read and analyzed eight fantasy books for children between the ages of six through twelve. We have summarized the empirical material from our books in three overarching themes that are built on Michael Gorman’s eight principles. These three different themes are as follows. Service-Oriented Steward of Information or Misleading Spreader of Disinformation, Inclusive and Welcoming or Exclusive with Strict Rules, and Moral and Trustworthy or Corrupt Villain. We have discussed our results with the help of literary descriptions within the fantasy genre to better understand the fantasy world as well as compared our findings with Gorman’s principles. Our conclusions show that the majority of the librarians and the libraries in our fantasy books work according to Gorman’s eight principles.
