Abstract [en]

This study explores the evolving role of public librarians, specifically focusing on their perspectives on competence development. The field of librarianship has undergone significant transformation in response to the digital age, leading to discussions about the future of the librarian profession. Public librarians now face multifaceted responsibilities, necessitating continuous competence development to meet dynamic user needs and adapt to shifting information landscapes. The study, positioned within the Swedish library sphere, employs qualitative methods, primarily semi-structured interviews, to uncover librarians’ perceptions and experiences, and identified needs for competence development. Acknowledging the challenges in the evolving information landscape, the research delves into how public librarians perceive competence development, their methods of engagement, utilized resources and the specific competencies deemed to crucial for improving library services. The aim is to contribute a nuanced understanding of public librarians’ perspectives on competence development. The study identifies diverse viewpoints and aims to identify patterns and factors influencing librarian’s engagement and perceived needs. Although results are not intended for broad generalization due to the limited sample, they are expected to contribute to the broader understanding of and discussion on public librarian’s competence development. The relevance of this study extends beyond academia, impacting the library sphere and librarians’ professional development. Insights gained from exploring librarians’ perspectives and competence development needs are crucial for designing effective programs that enhance library services and meet societal information needs. In conclusion, this qualitative study aims to provide valuable insights into the complexities of public librarians’ views on competence development, contributing to the broader discourse on the librarian’s evolving role and the societal significance of libraries.
