Why a law when there are exceptions? : A qualitative study on how the law of 11 hour rest has affected the life-puzzle of support assistants (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This study is made to evaluate how the newly implemented law of 11 hour 24-hour rest affects support assistants working with healthcare at two different LSS accommodations. The study uses interviews to find the support assistants' opinions and experiences on how the law has affected their work and their lives outside of work. It also uses previous research on similar subjects that can be linked to the topic of this study. The study has Karasek’s workplace demand and control model as the theoretical base. The results showed that the support assistants’ were missing workplace flexibility since the introduction of the law at the two workplaces, mainly because of the difficulties to change work shifts with colleagues. They have also experienced less control and influence over their new schedules and they also explain how the law does not suit the needs of the workplace in their opinion. The change in personal schedules with shorter evening shifts has also resulted in them getting less pay. In conclusion they find it more difficult to find work-life balance since the loss of workplace flexibility due to the implementation of the law at both workplaces.
