Go with the flow, or not? : A quantitative study on Swedish user’s experiences of flow states on TikTok (English)
Abstract [en]

This study explores the awareness and experiences of Swedish TikTok users regarding the flow state within the context of their application usage. Utilizing a survey and a feature analysis, these methods were chosen as they were suitable for collecting a larger amount of data. Quantitative data was then gathered to answer three research questions. These research questions focus on how Swedish TikTok users are aware of a flow state, what in their usage can affect their commitments and which factors in information architecture maintain this flow state. To answer these questions the data collection was done in two rounds, one where a survey was sent out to the research group personal social medias and the other as the research group studied the application’s features. Theories that were used is grounded in research regarding flow state and design principles and would therefore add value to this study. This resulted in some awareness about flow state among the users. In terms of impact on daily responsibilities, users report mixed experiences. Some users recognize the negative effects of extended TikTok use on productivity and limit their usage accordingly. The investigated factors that contribute to maintaining a flow state on TikTok were also identified as significant in inducing flow states. Overall, the study underscores the importance of understanding how Tiktok’s design and content strategies influence user experience and daily task management, emphasizing the need for balanced and mindful usage to mitigate potential negative impacts on productivity.
