Unfolding Paper is a practice-based exploration within the field of textile design. It is exploring the material properties of paper yarn in weaving for spatial context. Furthermore, different colour application methods have been tested. The project aims to design textiles that can enhance the sensuous qualities of spatial environments. Textiles have inherent qualities connected to their softness, flexibility, and lightness that are in contrast to the materials dominating architectural contexts. The result is a collection of woven textiles with paper yarn as main material. Paper yarn is a versatile material and the textiles of the collection are all unfolding aspects of paper yarn’s properties. In some examples, the stiffness of the material creates a three-dimensional shape or makes the textile curl. In others, the combination with other fibres such as wool creates a completely new material with a mix of the fibres’ qualities. The colours are used to enhance the movement and textures created by the material and woven structure. The project shows the potential of paper yarn and textiles as highly sensuous spatial elements.
