What do visitors want to be greeted by on the web? : A development of the home page to a regional tourism portal (English)
Abstract [en]
The advancements of web technologies has not only resulted in richer and more complex tourism destination websites, but also in higher demands on their content and appearence. This study aimed to investigate what visitors want to be greeted by on the homepage of a regional tourism portal, with the goal to create and evaluate a proposal for development.
A pre-study showed that visitors found the content to be confusing and the appearence to be too tight. These problems were therefore investigated more closely through two online surveys. The first focused on determining what the visitors were looking for on the site. The second focused on determining which content types the visitors expected to find on the homepage, and how they described different basic layouts.
The results showed that the content needed to be prioritized and arranged in a different way to better fill the needs of, and appeal to, the visitors. Some of the content components were neither sought after nor expected which meant that they can be removed completely. This would leave more space for other components and create a less tight feel. Based on these insights I created a proposal of development for the homepage, which were then evaluated though a smaller online survey. The result showed that the proposal was not described as confusing or tight and had a positive effect on desire to travel to the region.
