The purpose of this study is to examine which competences who is requested of the literature intermediary librarians, give a description of what difficulties there is for them and what they can do about it. The purpose is also to map their needs for a competence development in literature mediation. To answer the three questions I have visited five public libraries and interviewed five librarians who is working with fiction for adults. The theoretical perspective in this study is based on Jofrid Karner Smidts theory about interchange roles and Per Erik Ellströms theory which describe five dimensions within competence versus knowledge. The conclusion of the empirical studies and this study is showing that there are a several difficulties in convey literature, is a need of the librarians who wants to develop and get better in their role of literature mediation, there is also a wish to have the opportunity to read literature in working hours because they think that the working area who includes literature mediation is too important both for the librarians themselves and the public libraries. There is a lot of similarities between the empirical results and the scientific literature, for example the importance of social and literature competence for a literature intermediaries.
