The purpose of this bachelor thesis is to study how librarians perceive the increased focus on the library as a meeting place and how this affects the librarian profession. To fulfill the purpose following questions were used:

How do the public librarians perceive the changes in the librarian profession as a result of the increasing focus on the library as a meeting place?

What challenges do the public librarians see for the profession’s part due to the increased focus on the library as a meeting place?

The empirical material was collected through semi-structured interviews with five librarians. By implementing a content analysis, four themes were distinguished; “librarians view of the library as a meeting place”, “tasks and competences”, “the librarians’ role for the library as a meeting place” and “the library profession in the future”. Furthermore, the material was analyzed with the theory of professions presented by sociologist Andrew Abbott. The results show that the library profession change all the time, which makes it difficult to determine if the profession has changed because of the increased focus on the library as a meeting place, or if it is due to other changes. Additionally, the results show that librarians need more social skills due to the increased focus on the library as a meeting place. The results also indicates that the addition of new librarian competencies may lead to that the profession becomes vague. This also means that the profession might come to include jurisdictions that belong to other professions.
