The construction of the concept e-book : An analysis of the concept e-book in Swedish printed media (English)
Abstract [en]

The purpose of the thesis is to develop new knowledge about the construction of the concept e-book in Swedish printed media. Different contrasting definitions of the concept e-book have emerged, defining it either as an object or a service, a contrast that could be problematic. Using qualitative content analysis and a hermeneutic approach articles from the Swedish newspaper Svenska Dagbladet and the BoI journal Biblioteksbladet describing or commenting on e-books between 2005-2013 were analyzed. The descriptions of e-books were divided into four different categories based on perspective: availability, reference to or analogy with the printed book, the e-book as service and the commercial perspective. In conclusion there were differences between how the different articles described the e-book, in what perspective and what expressions and examples the used. They also had similarities in describing e-book either from the perspective of likeness or difference to the printed book or in perspective of the technology and services connected to the e-book.
