Reading Literature and Younger Children : An Interview Study about the Value of Children Librarians' Work to Promote Literature. (English)
Abstract [en]
The aim of this Master's thesis is to examine views and understandings belonging to Children Librarian’s, concerning younger children and literature. The study focuses on the respondents’ thoughts on the matter and from their own perspectives. To examine this, the following questions are asked; What are the effects of their work, in regards to the individual child? How does it further affect people in their near surrounding as well as the society in general?
The study is based on poor reading skills and reading as a decreasing leisured-based activity. The method used to collect data is the semi-structured qualitative interview and for analyzing it, three different theoretical models. These cover readingenvironment along with interaction, between children and adults.
The study shows that the respondents in general, are united regarding all of the three aspects that it covers. This result means that reading promotion towards the investigated group of target is valuable in many ways, even though it is also considered as challenging. The adult support is both critical and fundamental but parents or other caregivers establish the foundation, which make the ultimate decision theirs. Younger children are able as recipients to be included in the literary world and to be a part of a context that is expressed to work in their favor, especially in the moment. Eventual long-term effects that can be related to community level are less predicted or prioritized in their understanding.
