The purpose of this study is to examine how teacher librarians view their work and their work situation. Since the law that regulates the schools of Sweden changed in 2011 having a school library is mandatory for all schools. The law however, does not regulate the libraries being manned or not. Many of the Swedish schools are manned by a teacher, usually managing the library on part time aside from his or hers regular job as a teacher. This study uses Anders Øroms theories regarding different identities of librarians as a tool for examining five semi-structured interviews with such teacher librarians. The major finding of this thesis is how almost all of the interview subjects have taken on a role in their work very closely related to Øroms identity “the cultural minister”. They are primarily working towards teaching the pupils the joys of good literature. Another finding is that by having no time or more time to spend working at the library the teacher librarians develop towards different types of Øroms identities.
