Social media offers people opportunities such as building relationships, communicating and sharing information around the world. However, with this includes risks, especially in the case of platforms’ uncertain transparency such as collecting users’ information without their knowledge as well as the platforms’ complex privacy policies that restrict users from protecting their privacy. Platforms such asFacebook and Twitter have been criticized over the years for their lack of consideration of their users’ privacy. However, despite privacy concerns and risks, studies have shown that users continue to use these platforms. Users’ limited options for privacy protection can leave them vulnerable to exposure and privacy violations. Therefore, the aim of this study is to perform a literature review to increase understanding of the causes that make users continue using social media and what challenges they face when dealing with privacy policy on these platforms. The results show that factors such as trust, privacy awareness, perceived benefits and habits, and unawareness of privacy protection are more or less the cause of users’ activity and information sharing on social media, despite privacy problems and risks. Additionally, studies have shown that privacy policies are perceived as difficult and incomprehensive, wheares clear guidelines and short policies are shown to have a positive impact on users’ understandning and mangemangent of their privacy. These findings highlight the need for user-centred intiatives for policy awareness and increased transparency in how users privacy is used.
