This research aim is to provide a comprehensive understanding of the problems and challenges faced by music specialized libraries during the digitization processes. Through a multiple case study approach, specific issues encountered by different European libraries specialized in music are examined. Through semi-structured interviews conducted with employees in four different institutions, data was collected allowing an in-depth analysis of the diverse approaches, workflows, and adopted solutions. While existing literature may provide general guidelines for digitization processes, there is a lack of specific guidance and empirical evidence concerning the challenges unique to music libraries. This research seeks to provide valuable insights and practical recommendations, helping music libraries to share their experience and learn about effective strategies and workflows adopted by other institutions in order to overcome these challenges. Findings of the study identify common patterns, discrepancies, and areas for improvement. The digitization processes in music specialized libraries are complex and challenging, and they require a high level of expertise and resources. Main challenges encountered during the digitization processes are related to funding, technical solutions, copyright issues, and the lack of standardization in workflows and practices. The adopted solutions to these challenges vary among different institutions, and they depend on the specific context of each institution. Study provides insights into the decision-making processes, the methods employed in creating digital collections, and the associated problems and challenges and suggests that collaboration and knowledge-sharing among different institutions can contribute to the improvement of digitization processes in music specialized libraries.
