This essay aims to investigate the connection between the concept of memory as cultural heritage in relation to Swedish Public libraries. The essay also explores memory as social empowerment and the local public library as an important mediator of local memory. The focus of the essay is how public libraries relate to the concept of collective memory and if this collective memory can be used in order to fortify the role of public libraries and strengthen its relationship to the communities that these libraries operates within. Six libraries from different parts of Sweden answered a line of questions that related to and aimed to investigate into topics such as if public libraries can work with the concept of memory and if it somehow in a positive way would be able to redefine how the society both considers questions regarding collective memory, but also public libraries as memory institutions. The conclusion was that public libraries find it hard to relate to the concept of collective memory but also see potential in some aspects of working with memory as a public library.
