The school library has existed occasionally during the school's history; however, it is not always fully used. Research shows that students who have a staffed school library with a trained librarian learn to read and appreciate reading more than students who do not have these resources. A qualitative study, based on Loertscher’s taxonomy, was performed using qualitative semi-structured interviews with three school librarians in Sweden. Loertscher's taxonomy, an instrument measuring the function of the school library, is mostly used in the USA but would work in the Swedish school. This study highlights what it means to have a pedagogical school library and what its pedagogical role is. The results show that the educational role of the school library is very much decided by the librarian. Together with guidelines that exist for the respective city or school, a pedagogical method was developed that suited the students and included them in, among other things, reading enhancement and source criticism.
