The changed care meeting with patients with suspected Covid-19 : A qualitative interview study with ambulance nurses (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The ambulance nurses are responsible for nursing, assessment, symptom relief and treatment for patients encountered in the pre-hospital care environment. The virus Sars-cov-2 (Covid-19) caused a pandemic in modern times. The ambulance nurses' everyday life changed and the care meetings with suspected Covid-19-infected patients became a challenge. There are some research on Covid-19 and the meeting with other healthcare personnel, but there is limited research from the ambulance nurse's perspective and the pre-hospital meeting. The purpose of the study was to describe the ambulance nurses' experience of the care meetings with suspected Covid-19-infected patients. A qualitative interview study with an inductive approach was used. A total of eleven ambulance nurses participated, of which two of them had two specialist education in nursing. The ambulance nurses' experience in ambulance care varied between 4 and 27 years. The interviews took place in the form of semi-structured interviews and the collected data were analyzed according to Graneheim and Lundman's (2004) qualitative content analysis. The result showed that the ambulance nurses experienced fear of contracting Covid-19 themselves or passing the infection on to their relatives, as well as an uncertainty about how the care meetings would happen. It was perceived to be difficult to stay updated on new guidelines and communication difficulties arose when using protective equipment. Over time, the ambulance nurses gathered experience of the care meeting with suspected Covid-19-infected patients, which contributed to a feeling of safety and the nurses that self-protection improved.
