Ambulance nurses' experiences of caring for acutely ill children aged zero to six years in ambulance healthcare (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Within the ambulance service, ambulance nurses meet, assess and care for people of different ages, everything from a newborn baby to an elderly person. It is required that ambulance nurses possess a high level of competence to be able to provide life-saving care to both children and adults. Because acutely ill children are not as common in ambulance healthcare as acutely ill adults, ambulance nurses experience that there are difficulties in getting a good routine and experience in caring for acutely ill children. The aim of the essay was thus to describe ambulance nurses' experiences of caring for acutely ill children within ambulance healthcare. A qualitative interview study was conducted. Eight participants participated. Inclusion criteria were that the participants had to be nurse specialist in ambulance care and have at least three years of experience from clinical work in ambulance healthcare as well as caring for children between zero and six years of age. The results showed that ambulance nurses experienced an inner stress and worry when alarms are received about acutely ill children aged zero to six years. Ambulance nurses could also experience feelings of nervousness and worry when caring for acutely ill children. By having the opportunity for good preparation already on the way out to the acutely ill child, a feeling of control was created. Good collegial cooperation and good communication with both the child and the child's relatives were also considered important in the continued care of the acutely ill child.
