Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The physical, psychological and social state of development in adolescents separates their experiences and needs in the perioperative care from those of younger children and adults. The perioperative care does not have a particular orientation towards the care of adolescents, and as a consequence, the nurse anesthetist will meet adolescents both in the perioperative care for children, as well as in the perioperative care for adults. However, they often lack knowledge about how to provide care for adolescents in the perioperative environment. The aim was to describe the experiences and needs of adolescents in the perioperative caring environment. The study was conducted as a systematic literature review with a qualitative design as a method. A literature search was performed. After a process of selection and review of quality, the data collection generated in total, nine qualitative articles. The data was then analyzed through the nine steps of data analysis by Bettany Saltikov to form subthemes and themes. The results show that adolescents experience anxiety, fear, pain and discomfort, together with a sense of lost autonomy and integrity, this constitutes a new and unaccustomed feeling. The adolescents expressed a need for receiving information, being involved, and receive support from parents, healthcare personal and peers. Feelings of anxiety and fear was experienced throughout the whole period in the perioperative caring environment. Person centered care in combination with education about the specific needs of adolescents, could be a way to reduce feelings of anxiety and fear, and to increase wellbeing of adolescents.
