The patient's experience during isolation care (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Isolation care is used to reduce the spread of infection within the community and to protect patients with susceptibility to infection and who have a low immune system. Previous research has shown that isolation can create suffering and psychological stress. The purpose of this study was to investigate the patient's experience during isolation care. Method was a literature study with nine qualitative reviewed articles. The analysis was performed according to Friberg's model. The results showed that patients experienced different consequences during isolation care, both negative and positive. The negative consequences were that contact with relatives and social interactions was limited, the experience of loneliness, lack of information about treatment and illness and the changed space. The positive consequences for patients were protecting themselves and loved ones, and being alone contributed to rapid healing of the disease. At the same time, some patients expressed that good information and communication with the healthcare staff had a positive effect on the treatment. In the Discussion, the results reveal both negative and positive consequences for patients, which means that the needs of individuals are different and the nurse must care for patients according to the patients' life world and patient perspective. In order to facilitate isolation for patients, good communication between patients and the healthcare staff should be created. Communication with relatives and social interaction should be improved.
