Dementia patients' relatives experiences regarding support from the district nurse (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

When a person starts to suffer from dementia, their next of kin, relatives and friends are often affected too. The people closest to the individual often worry about the future, feel they do not know enough about dementia and grieve the fact that their loved one is faced with an incurable disease. They may also feel guilty about not being as present as they would have liked to be and not caring enough for their loved ones with dementia. Next of kin is eligible for support when their loved one is diagnosed with dementia, but studies show that very few relatives actually know where to apply for that support. However, previous studies have shown that relatives who receive support and information and get involved in the care of the individual are healthier, which helps to improve the quality of life for the person with dementia. The purpose of this study was to explore how people with a relative who suffers from dementia have perceived the support of the district nurse. The chosen methodology is a qualitative interview study with an inductive approach, and the material has been analysed using the Lindgren, Lundman & Graneheim’s (2020) qualitative content analysis. All in all, eight individuals related to people with dementia participated in the study. The participants came from the south-westerly part of Sweden; five women and three men. Out of these eight, three were married to a person with dementia, and five were adult children with a parent that had dementia. The main findings from this research show that the support offered to relatives of people living with dementia is often inadequate. Next of kin, relatives and close friends often feel they are left to fend for themselves and that it is up to them to try to find the help and support they require. Relatives said they wished the district nurse had offered both support and information at the time of the diagnosis and as the dementia progressed. In the cases where the district nurse offered information and support, it was very much appreciated, reduced the relatives’ level of distress and increased their quality of life.
