The multilingual school library : A qualitative interview study on school librarians and their experiences with multilingual children (English)
Abstract [en]

This thesis examines five school librarians' experiences of the library as a place where linguistic diversity is promoted. This thesis will examine: How do school librarians create an environment in the library where multilingual literature becomes available? What challenges do school librarians face in their work with students whose mother tongue is not Swedish? This thesis is based on semi-structured interviews with librarians at five different primary schools. The data has been analyzed using the theoretical model The four spaces model and research on multilingualism, the school library as a place for learning and as a meeting place. Students are informed about the library’s multilingual collection through book talks, book tips and library tours. Respondents lack time and information about which languages are spoken at school. Lack of space in the library is also recurring challenge. The school libraries have few books in languages other than Swedish and some libraries do not have books in languages the students request. The school librarians emphasize the need of collaboration with the teachers. The study shows that the school librarians have a great interest in creating the conditions to promote linguistic diversity in the library. However, school organization can negatively affect their work. The theoretical model The four spaces model is designed for public libraries and is thus sometimes difficult to apply to the school library context. The school library can to some extent be a meeting place and can become more of a place that promotes linguistic diversity given the right circumstances.
