Opportunities for women and men and interactions within the police authority : a qualitative study of new police assistants' experiences of the police authority (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The police authority is a male-dominated authority characterized by a traditional professional culture. The study examines from a gender perspective how new police assistants feel about becoming part of the police authority. Areas of research that have been applied are theoretical perspectives on social groups, women as a minority in organizations and organizational cultural perspectives. The empirics have been collected through a qualitative method where ten semi-structured interviews with six female and four male new police assistants were conducted. The experience showed that all respondents experienced the police authority as a very good workplace, and all received a welcoming and open treatment from employees. There were differences between female and male police assistants in how they experienced the structure and organization, which showed that there were gender inequalities within the organization.

The results showed that there are differences between the sexes in terms of positions and tasks within the organization. Only female police assistants experienced special treatments and that women were perceived to have higher performance requirements in comparison with men. There were also similarities between the sexes in that everyone perceived their development opportunities within the organization as potentially good. All police assistants feel that there is a strong culture and jargon. It differs between the respondents' experiences in how it is expressed.
