Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Covid-19 is a viral disease caused by the virus SARS-cov-2. It is a highly contagious disease that causes mild symptoms for the majority of the population but it can become serious for older individuals. During the Covid-19 pandemic, nurses have been faced with a major change in healthcare. The execution of work steps and nursing care has been affected with adaptation to the Covid-19 infection, which also risked the nurses' own health deteriorating. The purpose of the literature review was to shed light on nurses' experiences of caring for patients with Covid-19 infection in the hospital. In this literature-based work, a literature review was used as a method. A total of 13 qualitative articles were reviewed and analyzed.

The results revealed two main themes "Emotional stress and professional development" and "Experience of stressful work" as well as six sub-themes "Experience of psychological stress", "Nurse's lack of knowledge", "Experience of professional development", "Difficult working conditions", "Difficulties when using protective equipment' and 'Need for support during the pandemic'. In the conclusion, it emerged that preparation for future pandemics can contribute to patients receiving good and safe care but also to nurses having a better working environment. With good prerequisites for taking care of seriously ill patients, the nurse's own health can be improved and the quality of care increased.
