The needed competence for the ambulance staff in a single responder unit : Result from a modified Delphi study (English)
Abstract [sv]

Datainsamling genomfördes i Sverige i mars-maj 2022.

Abstract [en]

Background and problem: The development of ambulance care has led to an increased need for new units. Single responder (SR) is a single crewed unit that often uses for the patient assessments, to refer patients to the right level of care and to release regular ambulances. There is a lack of description of the needed competence within SR.

Aim: The aim of this study was to describe the competence that nurses in the ambulance's single responder unit are considered to need.

Method: Modified Delphi method with three rounds was used. The first round was conducted with focus group interviews and analyzed with content analysis. The second and third rounds were conducted through surveys using a four-point Likert and analyzed with descriptive statistics.

Results: Five competence categories were identified. 39 of 80 claims reached consensus. Being able to communicate with different units to achieve their goal, to be able to create a good encounter alone and to have a suitable professional experience were identified as the most important competencies.

Conclusion: Increased understanding of the needed competence within SR can be implemented in prehospital recruitment and education. Further research on the function of SR and staff’s most appropriate formal competence is needed.
