Accessibility for people with dyslexia on the web : A study on how three goverment agencies include dyslexics on their websites (English)
Abstract [en]

According to the Diskrimineringslagen (DL, 2017) §4.3, a person shall not be disadvantaged due to a disability in that different measures have not been taken for accessibility in different situations. In Sweden, it is estimated that there are between five and eight percent of the population who possess some form of dyslexia or reading difficulties. This thesis is aimed at investigating whether the three authorities, Skatteverket, Polismyndigheten and Försäkringskassan follow the guidelines that are available based on previous research, in order to create accessible websites for people with dyslexia. The study was based on a mixed method that included a content analysis and a questionnaire survey. Based on previous research, a framework with guidelines that could improve usability on websites, was presented in this study. The results from the content analysis showed that the authorities complied with the framework to some extent, but there are clear shortcomings that need to be addressed. The respondents who conducted the survey were members of Dyslexiförbundet and took part in the survey via the association's social media. The results of the survey showed that the respondents agreed that the majority of the guidelines from the framework were consistent with their own experiences. The guidelines that the respondents did not agree with showed how complex dyslexia is and how difficult it is for developers to create accessible websites.
