Navigational design in Learning Management Systems : A study about challenges and important aspects of navigational design in LMS (English)
Abstract [en]
Due to the increase in internet usage around the world, it is getting more common for schools and universities to use learning management systems (LMS). An LMS is, according to Skolverket (2018), a digital environment, where teachers and students interact. The interactions vary between taking part of uploaded course materials and handing in papers, to communicating with direct messages and taking part of Q&As about different subjects. For the user to get the most optimal usage of the platform, there are some factors to consider. Those factors are connected with how good the usability of the platform is. Conte, Nakamura och Oliveira (2017) describes a platform with high usability as something that the user will find easy to use and learn, while being effective enough for the user to complete the tasks they have for their visit. There are many factors that play part of defining good usability, one of them which is the most important part, is navigation. Arshad, Afzal, Majeed, Muzammal och Rahman (2016) explains through their study that not all LMS have good navigation, which affects the user experience in a negative way. Therefore, this paper will provide insight on different aspects of navigation in different learning management systems. Through user testing and gathering of earlier studies, comparing and providing a more clear view of good and bad navigation at online learning platforms. The results indicate that common challenges in navigational design in LMS consists of inadequate development of shortcuts and services.
