Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This study treats both how characteristics are presented in children’s literature and how specific features are linked to gender. The focal areas refers to how gender roles are portrayed in the aspects regarding male and female form. This study also discusses how these representations may affect children’s creation of their own gender identity. By analysing the construction of language in children’s literature and the signals these works sends out, the above stated issues can be unraveled.

Thepurpose of the study is to examine what is presented as stereotypical and norm breaking in the studied literature and this is carried out by analyzing the text's structure, construction and content.

Our method of choice has been to use a discourse analysis. Through this method, you enable the language to be broken down into smaller parts, which is more suitable for analyzing the construction of the language in a more in depth manner. The material that has been used in the analysis, consists of five works of children’s literature.

The results show that there are characteristics that tends to be typical for the male and the female, but features that break these expectations are also made visible. However when it comes to the representation of men and women in our studied material, it show that men are represented in a wider and more frequent manner and that this might have an impact on the creation of gender identity for young children.
