Physical description [en]

The show while measuring the temorality of the terms Tradition and Modern re-interprets the relationship between arts and crafts in contempoarary Pakistan- arts being exemplifcation of modern and crafts as an illustration of tradition. The bifurcation between the two forms of creativity in the case, is essentially a colonial construct. In an effort to establish the cultural supremacy over their subject or simply misjudjing the aesthetic concerns of indigenous artists, the British rejected our age-old artistic traditions and considered them to be more skill oriented and less conceptually driven. Hence, they imposed their own ideals of Modernity onto us. Be it in terms of medium, form or content Western standards were set to be followed in case to be sucessful ´modern´. These borrowed epitomes of modernity left us wandering in the follwoing epoch of post-colonialism and or post-modernism. More recently, at the dawn of 21st century, compelled to address the identity crisis in the age of globalization and technology or to understand the complex conceptualities and cultural relaities artists have started probing into the traditional practices. In such a context this exhibition connects the cords with our actual foundations enabling the artists to make informed decisions towards what Modern can be in our context.
