Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

In the introductory chapter of the study the content of the curriculum regarding the work with gender equality is presented, as well as several different researchers 'thoughts on gender roles and gender. Furthermore, previous research results regarding the influence of literature, children's development of their gender identity, and how the books' characters are represented based on gender are reported. These previous studies show a unified result; there is a difference in how often and in what way girls and boys are portrayed in the literature they are exposed to and that this affects their self-image.

The purpose of the study is to investigate whether there are differences in how often and in what way girls and boys are represented in the children's literature the preschool borrows from the libraries.

Based on a list of the 25 most borrowed books for pre-schools in a medium-sized Swedish city, we have made a literature analysis with focus on gender theory. The study consists of a quantitative and a qualitative part.

The results show whether the representation of girls and boys differs in the books analyzed. It also emerges that there is a difference in how children are portrayed in the books based on gender.
