Feminine, and female, masculine, and male are not the same. This project investigates femme queer wear through DIY techniques. It aims to highlight the action of making and to explore the design possibilities of DIY techniques for fashion design from a queer perspective. This project started with an interest in DIY techniques and has over time evolved. DIY stands for ”do it yourself” and is a method of building, modifying, or repairing things without the direct aid of experts or professionals. The project is called DIY queer craft and is an incorporation of DIY techniques and queer craft. In queer craft, the message is the core and the craft is the communication tool for how this is translated. This project explores a selection of chosen DIY techniques by further developing them. The main DIY techniques are filling, lacing, and beading with additional supplementary DIY techniques from the DIY mindset perspective. They are foam, tape, and decoupage. The importance of this exploration has been to develop each DIY technique by itself, but through different properties and interaction in materials and colors, change the expression. DIY queer craft has been explored in relation to my own body and my measurements as well as my own queer femme non-binary identity. This project creates a space for femme queer expressions and discusses both within the written and the visual work a new discussion of body and gender.
