The purpose of my bachelor thesis is to describe how immigrants, after passing the initial phase of being newcomers to Sweden, use the facilities provided by the public library. Previous research on recently arrived immigrants and their use of public libraries suggests that libraries fill an important function for this group, providing them with both a means for learning Swedish and a common meeting place. In my research I endeavor to address the following questions: How do immigrants use the public library and its facilities? In what ways do these immigrants use the library in order to maintain and develop their mother tongue? To which extent does the public library function as a place for integration and a democratic meeting place for this user-group? To answer these questions, I have conducted semi-structured interviews with five immigrants. I analysed the empirical material with the help of The Four-spaces model and by consulting previous research. The result of my work indicates that the informants mainly used the library as a place for learning and as a meeting place. The frequency of their visits decreased over a period of time, although they still considered the public library to be an important place. None of the informants used the library as a resource to maintain or develop their mother tongue. They instead all emphasized the importance of learning Swedish.
