Abstract [en]
Background: The problematic overproduction becomes an increasing problem in the fashion industry, as the fast fashion market is characterized being unpredictable including high volume production in order to match to changing demand. To cope with the uncertainty, the agile supply chain (SC) strategy responds to real-time demand and therefore contributes to aligning demand and supply. However, this strategy needs great explanation in the field of business-to-business (B2B), as this sector is from major extent in the fashion industry. Therefore, this research dives into the dimensions flexibility, close supplier relationship, joint product development and transparent information sharing which are all important elements in the B2B process as well as crucial factors in any agile SC.
Aims of Research: The major goal in this thesis research is to evaluate the agile supply chain concept in the B2B fashion industry to finally contribute to the literature by corroborate and falsify the concept. In particular, in B2B context referring to the upstream relation between retailer and supplier which is not including the end-consumer. This aims for in-depth knowledge of the particular case study to make a contribution in having less overproduction in the B2B fashion industry.
Method: To examine the agile SC in B2B context, the method in this study entails a single case study in order to provide in-depth and practical insights. Furthermore, this study is approached by gathering qualitative data including semi-structured interviews and participant observation. Moreover, the findings are analysed using a data coding method.
Results: The data collection offered a review of the four agile dimensions in practice. Accordingly, these dimensions entail drivers, enablers, and challenges which are important while managing agility in a B2B company. The discussion shows the importance of connecting all four factors and the challenge to reduce the overproduction due to complexities in the B2B process. However, this results in a comprehensive overview to manage the B2B agility.
