The aim of this study is to look at how librarians express their part in reading groups organized by public libraries. The study is based on interviews with seven public librarians in south regions of Sweden. The main theory used to analyse is found in the article Bibliotekaren som litteraturformidler (1994) written by the Norwegian librarian Jofrid Karner Smidt, where she talks about five different roles that a librarian can have in this context and how they appear. Three of these roles were used in this study: the pedagogue, the literature expert and the marketer. The interviewed librarians mostly had a similar view on how they look at their role in the reading group. They saw their purpose as to provide all kinds of people with a possibility to join in discussions about mutual interests and share various opinions about books. Some librarians saw it as a chance to help the members of the group to read books they might never have read otherwise, and to learn more from each other. The librarians in this study sometimes use other media like movies or audio books for their work with reading groups. It is also a chance for the librarians to heighten their own expertise, to learn more about their users; and how they feel. Furthermore, the reading group provides means to market all the services a library can give. The reading groups are also a way to market the expertise of the librarians against other colleagues and the politicians.
