"Oh my God, it's a Revolution!" A Study of the multilingual Intranet in the European Parliament and the positive and negative effects that appear in connection with the many languages in the Parliament (English)
Abstract [en]

This is a thesis on the Intranet use in the European Parliament. We investigated the use from a multilingual point of view, but also from a communication perspective. What we wanted to know was how a multilingual group, with presumably different computer skills, in the organisation handle the Intranet information. What are the positive and negative effects of a multilingual information exchange over an Intranet? To find out, we sent a questionnaire as an e-mail attachment to all members of a chosen committee and their assistants. When we visited the Parliament in Brussels we left a reminder in their pigeonholes. In Brussels we interviewed one Member of Parliament, two documentalists and four assistants/political advisers all Swedish. In general the users are satisfied with the Intranets they are using and no serious linguistic problems are revealed. They don't use the Intranet for discussions, as much as we thought, but if they communicate with other nationalities they adjust their language to the addressee. They are very flexible in their communication and if there is any problem it is mainly mistranslation by the interpreters and translators.
