Children’s summer Holiday Books : what children themselves choose to read (English)
Abstract [en]

The aim of this Bachelor thesis is to gain an insight into what girls and boys choose to read in their spare time. The theoretical perspective with which the subject matter is viewed is that of gender and genre. I would like to see if there are differences or similarities in their choice of genre. The material stems from a promotional reading project conducted in the summer of 2012 aimed at children in the age group 6-16. The number of participation children were 146 an 730 books were read. They were divided into age groups and genres respectively. The analytical method is a quantitative and qualitative content analysis. The findings of the children’s free choice of genre when selecting books are presented in diagrams. The result of the analysis is in accordance with previous research regarding children’s reading habits with few exceptions. Girls read more than boys and also read more across the genres. Boys read books up to age 12 and then their interest declines. Both genders prefer to read authors of their own respective gender and detective stories are popular with both boys and girls. More effort needs to be invested in promotional reading projects in order to keep up the interest in reading for both boys and girls.
