The debate on e-books in Swedish public libraries (English)
Abstract [en]

The increased popularity of e-books in the Swedish public libraries started a debate in newspapers and library journals because of the increase in costs, which this popularity had led to. The main subject of the debate was the business model provided by the e-book vendor Elib, which according to some ruins the libraries financially. In this thesis, opinion articles have been analyzed using a theoretical model of cultural politics by the Danish Library and Information science researcher Dorthe Skot-Hansen. The results of the study showed that people from the library field, publishers and authors were the ones contributing to the debate. The analysis of the articles showed that the model of cultural politics which consists of four general motives: social change, education, economic growth and entertainment was visible in the articles. The motive of economic growth was the most dominant perspective in the articles, followed by education and social change. The arguments used in the articles were different according to which part in the debate one had. Authors of articles from the library field were the most dominant part, using argumentations of the libraries as insitutions contributing to social change, cultural experiences and education. The perspective of economic growth was the most covered one in the articles, concerning the economic situation for the libraries, the authors and publishers rights to economic compensation for the lending of e-books. The analysis of the articles also showed a concern about the book markets and the libraries’ positions in the digital society, a development which has lead to an insecurity concerning the economics.
