Abstract

Dual dispatch of emergency medical services (EMS) and other first responders (FRs) can shorten response times to acute illnesses by several minutes. The interactional care project implies that home-health nurses (HHNs) can be sent out to patients while waiting for the ambulance (WWFA).

The aim of the present study was to gain an understanding of how HHNs who have attended a WWFA assignment were prepared before joining the interactional care programme and how clinical competence regarding WWFA can be developed. To this end, 11 HHNs in 6 municipalities were interviewed, and qualitative content analysis was used to interpret the data.

The findings consisted of two main categories, preparation and development of professional competence, and the associated sub-categories for each. The results indicated that HHNs needed to broaden their knowledge and acquire new skills. In addition, the HHNs have few opportunities for reflection and feedback during the process of developing their professional competence. Feedback and reflection are important to HHNs but must be planned and structured by their management.
