A light in the dark : A case study on social workers’ working conditions (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The aim of our study was to investigate social workers’ working situation. To do so, we chose to conduct a case study at a Family and individual unit in a municipality in Västra Götaland. We wanted to examine the social workers’ attitude towards their labour conditions and their psychosocial work environment. Previous research suggests that the lack of staff orientation in the organization is the reason why social workers feel worse in their workplace and an another reason is also that they do not feel cared for by their employer and leader. We chose to do a qualitative study and we therefore interviewed seven social workers, one family secretary and a head of unit, according to a semi-structured interview guide. The results that emerged from the interviews were that the social workers felt that their work situation, in contrast to previous research, were good and well functioning in both staff orientation and from a health perspective. The respondents were also positive about the manager's leadership and believed that the communication between them was good. They also experienced good support from the manager in difficult situations and had no problem with asking for help. Furthermore, however, the social workers considerd that there were certain deficiencies in the threats and violence-work, such as the lack of training and supervision. They also agreed with each other on the issue of the social work education and that it might be important to highlight the proposal of mentoring and to introduce psychological tests in the social worker education like the tests in the polices’ criteria.
