Being in an overwhelming situation — Patients' experiences of trauma care in the emergency department : An integrative literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Trauma is a common phenomenon in the emergency department. Severely injured patients are taken care of by a multidisciplinary team in a structured manner, focusing on life-saving interventions. Trauma care has a strong medical focus, where the patient's perspective is not always visible or prioritized. This can contribute to the patient's multidimensional needs not being met, negatively affecting their experiences of care. The aim of the study was to compile literature to highlight patients' experiences of trauma care in the emergency department. An integrative literature review with a systematic approach, combined with thematic analysis, was used to address the aim. The results yielded two main themes: Positive experiences and Negative experiences, as well as six subthemes: Experience of high-quality care, Valuable emotional experience, Good treatment and Inadequate care, Lack of emotional support, Unprofessional care. By incorporating the patient perspective into trauma care, person-centered care is facilitated, with good information and communication enabling patient involvement in their care, thereby contributing to positive experiences of healthcare.
