Stress in Sahlgrenska emergency room (English)
Abstract [sv]

Intervjuerna spelades in och sedan transkriberats.

Abstract [en]

Background: Stress is a very common phenomenon that is often found in health care. Work-related stress is one of the most common causes to sick leave. High workload, threats and violence are risks for occurrence of stress and mental illness.

Aim: The purpose of the study is to investigate how and when the health care staff experience stress at the emergency room in Sahlgrenska University Hospital Gothenburg, and what consequences the stress entails.

Method: A qualitative method with eight semi-structured interviews has been the basis of this study. About ten questions were formulated with the help of an interview guide, and these questions were asked to the respondents in individual rooms. The interviews were recorded and then transcribed.

Results: The majority of the respondents experienced a negative stress, most often when there was a high workload, or when there were unpleasant and threatening patients. Stress was also experienced when there was a staff shortage at night, or a lack of communication or support between colleagues. This were reasons for the occurrence of stress. The rest of the respondents experienced a positive stress where they felt that they worked better in stress, and stress did not affect them bad.

Conclusion: The health care staff at the emergency room experience stress in different ways, but usually it is mutual. The stress affects them in different ways, but the majority felt that they were stressed when there were high workload, staff shortages, and severe cases of patients.
