Library services at special residents for elderly people : A possibility for development within the old-age care? (English)
Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to investigate the access and demand for library services at a special resident for elderly people. The study also draws attention to the knowledge within the staff at the special resident for elderly and at the public library concerning the need for library services in this group of elderly. The methodology used is semi-structured interviews with two groups of the elderly and semi-structured interviews with employees at the special resident for elderly and at the public library. The results from the interviews have been analysed with reference to earlier research and to the theoretical ideas about “the public sphere”, “lifelong learning” and “social capital”. The result of the study shows that there is a clear gap between the access and demand for library services in the groups of elderly interviewed. The elderly in the study only have access to a library room at the resident which is unorganized and consists of old literature. The elderly demand, besides an organized and well-equiped library room with modern literature, a wide range of library services. The author points out the need for more research concerning the demand for library services at special residents for elderly in Sweden.
