Abstract [en]

The thesis, The Sky is the Mirror - An Astrological Exploration of Personalized Jacquard Woven and Braided Wearable Textiles, is a design project that explores the intersection of the art of craft and textile design. The project takes place in the field between ancient garment construction and symbolism and contemporary textile design. This project aims to create a collection of personalized woven and braided wearable textiles with emotional value to allow users to express ownership and pride. The study is based on emotional design and evaluates upon the pleasure associated with the collection. Through the research, several techniques of digital jacquard weaving and braiding were conducted, and a contemporary take on ancient textile and garment traditions was developed. The explorations resulted in the development of a system where the concept is based on the users astrological birth chart - making each collection unique to the user. The collection resulted in 5 wearable textiles, in which the 11 zodiac signs from the birth chart were represented in the 5 pieces. The zodiac signs were represented through the development of symbols and colors creating an extensive and expressive color work. Creating personalized wearable textiles offers the opportunity of developing sustainable and emotionally valuable designs. In addition, the thesis suggests the prospects of the otherwise unconventional use of rope in garment construction within the contemporary field of textile design.
